Here he is applying primer to the cleaned metal. Monday, June 9. 2008Woodshop Update June 7-8, 2008June 7, 2008  How do you hold these parts? John Faulhaber is putting the finishing touches on a wood jig to hold pieces together in alignment for welding. These pieces were fabricated this week as part of the work to expand our woodshop capabilities by restoring a circa 1883 molding machine, back to operation. These brackets will mount and hold a necessary countershaft.  New Machine and countershaft base The above referenced machine will be mounted with motor and countershaft on a unitized base. Victor Humphreys is centerpunching holes following a cardboard template of the machine base. June 8, 2008  SPC guys- euww! The passenger department guys were back in the shop, hiding from the rain and enjoying the air conditioning. Wayne Baksic and Mike Baksic were making 5 new step boxes for improving the safety of visitor access to some of our cars. Monday, June 9. 2008New Power for Yard 5 Displays June 8, 2008I am making this entry for the AC/DC line department to get the blog active for that department. New cars have been placed in Yard 5 to upgrade our visitor experience. Here we see Department Head Max Tyms working to set a new pole on the north side of that yard, as part of a project to upgrade AC power in that area.
Sunday, June 8. 2008Behind the Scenes June 7, 2008Pursuing our lettering duties, Buzz Morrisette relettered a lot of the Rock Island coach 2602 last week.  Buzz Applies MAGIC Here we see him applying the needed details by lettering text on the two sliding platform doors. Saturday, June 7. 2008Chicago Sanitary District Gondola CSDX 39 PHOTO As part of the never ending series of repairs, we returned to work on this car. Last year we discovered that the power hand brake was inoperative. This weekend we removed the Ajax brake due to some very skilled torch work by Jerry Saunders.  PHOTO The car is sitting at the east end of Track 53 and here is where the 'culprit' used to be mounted.  PHOTO Next was a fairly difficult disassembly job by Kirk Warner.  PHOTO Followed by the repairs. Here Kirk has the rear cover of the assembly in a hydraulic press to work at straightening it. This was followed by some expert welding by Rod Turner, a lot of grinding and various other 'dirty work'. June 7, 2008  PHOTO Work continued to repair and rebuild the power handbrake for the car. Here, Victor Humphreys and Rod Turner have heated the nut holding on the handwheel, and are struggling to remove the yellow hot nut to release the wheel.  PHOTO Next, the assembly backplate is being hot riveted back in place. Thursday, June 5. 2008CCW 300 Update June 4, 2008 West End Pete Galayda is installing the new wood decking on the west end of the locomotive. It is hard to believe how many steps are needed to fit each individual board, preserving, painting, and finishing, and now at last - installation! Thursday, June 5. 2008UP 25086 Update June 4, 2008 Where are the Steps Work continues here every week, even if your reporter does not get back there every week. Here, Joe Luciani shows where one of the step wells has been removed. New steel is being fabricated for the body repairs, and ultimately a new step well is to be created. |

Ah yes, I have made such Jibs myself. If it were me, I would add in each corner an angled piece from the base to the Jib to act as sway bracing. [...]
