Work has been continuing even with shorter daylight hours and weather that can best be described as 'challenging'. Read to the end of this post for a surprise image!
The pattern for the reporting marks (four inch) has been laid out and tape has been applied to ease the task of painting.
A small brush (some would say too small) is used to apply the paint. See previous entries for the B end work - it is completely lettered.
The reporting marks letters are done - SHARP!
Victor Humphreys helps position a stencil for two lines located lower on the tank end.
We use a technique we developed to apply two coats of the Chrome Yellow paint.
The moment of truth comes when the stencil mask must be removed - CAREFULLY!
With daylight running out, here is the A end as we left it Sunday night. But by Monday at noon, it was complete!
For the surprise, here is the builder's photo that was uncovered during the research for this car. Compare it to the work we have completed. There have been many challenges to be overcome in working on this restoration, spanning four summers at IRM. But the team has been persistent, and many members have contributed to the effort. To see more of the story go to the category tree to right side of these entries, click on the "+" sign for the Freight Car Department, and then click on the category for Union Tank Car Company 17222.
This car has been on site less than one week and already a number of questions have been answered. It is DEFINITELY CB&Q 993! The car is sponsored by the Pullman Library (Ted Anderson and crew) and will be used to store some of that collection.
This lettering on the car underframe puts to rest the speculation on the car number.
This set of reporting marks was used only to get the car moved to IRM and perhaps contributed to the confusion over the correct number.
And on the truck frame we can see the MOW service number - BN 976090

Last winter a number of older seats more appropriate to the car were restored and installed.
Lately, Mark Hoffmann has been needlechipping the interior walls, and most of one side below the windows is complete.

With a lot of the car interior painted here are some of the restored light fixtures working on the north wall of the lounge section
Roger Kramer is busy adding another fixture.

Those of you who have been following these blogs for some time will have noted many entries documenting the progress on this locomotive. But on Sunday, it was pulled out of Barn 4 to see the light of day for the first time in years.

On Saturday Buzz Morissette was laying out the last remaining major elements in getting the painted car lettered.
And the finished results on the east end speak for themselves. This project is a good example what can be accomplished by perhaps a dozen members participating when and where they can.

I was not around at the time. General discussion suggests that it was "pretty marginal" in a number of areas. Nigel
