Monday, January 11. 2010Wood Shop Update - January 9, 2020
Here are some shots from Saturday work, I will try to add a few from Sunday, later today as chores, weather, and time allow.
Rich Witt, Victor Humphreys, and Dick Lukin inspect the layout for a new door we are working on. Rich Witt and Buzz Morisette are using the table mounted router to add the window beading to new stock for replacement windows for the MILW 01984 caboose. Victor Humphreys and Buzz are rabbeting the window stock for the caboose windows. Note the pile of parts sitting on the jointer table at the left. Tim Peters chips in with some maintenance work on the old Delta Bandsaw. It seems we have a noisy outboard motor bearing which will probably demand replacement in the near future. One problem with using machines that range in age from 60 years to 130 years old is a more or less constant list of maintenance items. This effort goes mostly unnoticed, but we would be very interested in any volunteer that is good at tinkering. Buzz is holding up the new artwork to be applied to two of the new upper sash windows for CRT 1268. On the rack behind him are twenty one of those new sash, with the first coat of paint drying. Thursday, January 7. 2010Wood Shop Update - January 6, 2010Victor Humphreys and John Faulhaber are fitting together some door parts on what is developing to be a complicated project. John Nelligan was doing precise layout work and markings for the next step on the steam department windows for N&W 2050. Henry Vincent and Rich Witt were making a new roof rib or carline. I think this was being done for Gerry Dettloff which would mean it is destined for the TM D 13 dump car. Thursday, January 7. 2010

Comments (0) Passenger Car Work - January 6, 2010Roger Kramer comes out to continue the volunteer tradition one or two days every week, but seldom gets caught in the viewfinder. Rumor has it that Santa got him a new digital camera so perhaps some of his pics will show up here. But yesterday he was in the Barn 4 shop hunched over the sandblaster, cleaning up various castings and bits of hardware, soon to be mounted and re-installed on our passenger cars. Comments (0) Milwaukee Streetcar 972 Update - January 6, 2010Sunday, January 3. 2010Wood Shop UpdateThere is a high level meeting in progress as Tim Peters and Buzz Morisette review lettering on old photos for the CRT 1268. Buzz is our 'go to guy' when it comes to vinyl decals or paint masks. They are reviewing the various detail changes in the lettering styles over time so as to be appropriate for the magnificent restoration work that Tim is engaged in. Richard Schauer was in the shop yesterday and snapped this pic after an intense few hours work on window parts for the N&W 2050. Left to right are the crew of John Faulhaber, Victor Humphreys, and myself. How hard is to make a simple window? Well, for this project there are 44 pieces required for the frames and mullions. So, after picking the lumber and getting it to the shop it was jointed, crosscut, ripped, planed, beading routed, rabbets made for the glass and about 85 feet of tiny beading strips made to retain the glass after glazing. Remaining is the layout work for the jointery, mortising, creating a jig to crosscut exactly all pieces to be tenoned, tenoning, meticulously hand fitting each frame, glueing, sanding, and trimming. Whew! Buzz is also working on new windows for the MILW 01984 caboose. Slabs of lumber are in process, here being ripped into frame parts on the table saw. Careful measurements are required at each step as Buzz uses a caliper to ensure dimensions are correct and an exact replica can be constructed to help renew this car. In the background you may see Victor Humphreys working on door parts and reviewing his project with Barbara Lanphier. Barbara had her second knee replacement surgery last fall and it was good to note her progress and see her back on site. Sunday, January 3. 2010Passenger Department Updatehello folks and Happy New Year! As I spent the holidays with "not enough hours", this report is long overdue, but at least I want to share the last dept report to the board with you. GENERAL DEPARTMENT PROGRESS As winter approaches, the passenger dept begins to get involved in some of the projects that have been left idle during operating season. Winterizing is a big step during this time of year, deploying heating devices, and weather proofing outdoor areas. We are spending some time performing bench repairs on some spare parts for the collection, and further organizing our parts inventory for the future. The wheel switch on the CRIP coach remains on hold for funding approval. CBQ 993, a Havelock built baggage car is on property, and in the hands of the Wed Special Projects group for cosmetics and interior CBQ 1309, a baggage car owned by IRM at least since 2001, remains an intended project. There has been no significant progress during the past month, but we hope the Executive Director is establishing his contacts and preparing to move forward at the first opportunity. INDIVIDUAL EQUIPMENT REPORTS DLW coaches (3) Two cars are service. The third car is still undergoing required structural welding. The repairs are now progressing, with deck plates being installed. Entry door is being rebuilt. Glen Springs This car remains outside until Barn 11 is completed, and therefore has not received a lot of work this month. ATSF 2544 One side of the coach area has now been installed, and the second side of “modern” seats is being removed, to allow for completion of the area for spring. As a repeat of last winter, the first project is to clean and refinish the wall surfaces behind the seats, and this has begun. John McGloughlin Interior restoration continues, as well as metal and paint work on one vestibule Dover Strait Most interior painting is complete, with some ceiling to be completed in spring. Light fixtures and window treatments continue to be reinstalled. B&M 3288/1094 No significant changes, beyond the continued progress. Jack continues on the coach area of the car. Windows are reinstalled. Seat frames have located We await the assistance to use the forklift and retrieve the steps from the material yard. Once they are located behind the barn, prep work can begin. DMIR 84 More window frames are planned for repair over the winter, as some of them showed serious deterioration during the Thomas event Yard 5 display As noted earlier, holiday lights have been installed for the Christmas season. As always, we have ambitious expectations for the winter to make the display better for 2010. RDC 9933 While the major restoration work remains "on the list", we currently have been working on the units electrical system in an effort to make the car more self contained for the coming season. The other projects are in progress: disassemble more seating for repairs. restore the proper doorway to one bathroom. repair and rewiring of more of the baggage rack circuitry further repairs to baggage rack lighting circuits, as well as a planned spring effort to repair the secondary air circuit to provide interior brake control as well as a horn. CBQ Silver Ridge This car is planned for some interior work during the offseason. Several sliding roomette doors are off their tracks for various reasons. The wall damaged during the Terror event in 2008 is not yet repaired due to time constraints, but we hope that it will be repaired during the 2009-10 offseason. In addition we have begun some of the interior wall restoration, "De-Amtrak" ing the walls. We received a donation of several pieces of hardware from Gateway Rail, and we plan to install them as well. ACL Birmingham Off season work for this car will include a reworking of the ventilation system to eliminate some of the weaknesses. The kitchen has some backdating to be done, but it will take a secondary role as we focus on Silver Ridge and the ventilation system.
