Thursday, April 29. 2010Wood Shop Update - April 28, 2010Following his great success in making a new sash for the CA&E 409 signbox, Rich Witt has been requested to fabricate another one for the other end of the car. Here the rough wood is being sized and prepped. College days are here again as John Nelligan sets up an engineering office to further de code the mysteries of the controls and wiring for Charles City 300. Finally we were able to switch gears and begin making four new cupola windows for our Illinois Central 9792 caboose. Other work included efforts toward the re-upholstery of seats for TM 972, and we saw Charlie Strong stop in, working on the dozen new CA&E windows that the woodshop completed last week.

Comments (4) Chicago Rapid Transit 1268 - April, 2010Thanks to Pete Pedersen who has taken and volunteered these photos for a tour of the work on CRT 1268. You have seen single shots of work in progress in our shops, but these are all taken on or in the car itself. Monday, April 26. 2010Wood Shop Update - April 25, 2010Joel Arndt is making some new saddles for the CA&E 460. These are 'temporary' in nature to allow the roof and trolley base area to be serviceable. Tim Peters continues the major restoration project on CRT 1268. He has been removing seat handles, stripping years of paint and crud, buffing them back to bright brass, and clear coating them, as seen here. We are in the beginning stages of a new Wood Shop project. Here you see an old and decrepit door on our depot. There are seven other doors of a different panel design and layout so we presume this was a stand in or replacement door installed maybe 40 years ago after the depot came to Union. It has definitely seen better days. Here you see an example of the more 'standard' type of door design in use and found in our depot. I say 'better' with some reservations but certainly better from the standpoint of being period accurate and more consistent. So the plan is to try to construct and fabricate a new door, determine the designs, and effort to reproduce this design. In the future some of the other doors may also see replacement.

Trolley Bus Dept. Update - 04/25/2010 Posted by Ray Piesciuk

Over the past several weeks, Wally Unglaub and Howard & Mary Geier have been cleaning the interior of the SF 614. Howard has also done some test buffing on the exterior of the coach. All these jobs are not yet complete and will continue over the next month or so (at least). Richard Schauer and I have been working on replacing 614’s old trolley bases (which had broken springs) and replacing one of the poles which was bent. We still need to drag the coach out of the barn to reattach the poles and replace the battery. At that time we hope to be able to move it under its own power again. This weekend, Jerry Saunders worked on repair and maintenance of the overhead switches. Max Tyms helped him properly cut power and Dave Diamond allowed us to use a B&G bucket truck for the day (thanks guys!). He still has a few to do so the line will be out of service until next weekend, but he repaired the manual switch in front of the Andersen Garage! Finally, Richard and Jerry went over to the car dept. to help inspect and do some maintenance on the CTA Singles to get them ready for service. I have been working in B&G inventorying some new CTA sign acquisitions. Check out the “CTA Sign Sales” link from the home page as about 50 new signs (mostly bus stops) have been recently added.
Sunday, April 25. 2010Wood Shop Update - April 24, 2010Here Jeff Brady makes some carefully fitted piece to continue on the ME 28 doors. I thought I would sneak this into the wood shop report to avoid another entry with only this pic for the ME 28. Dick Lukin was out to help on several projects. Here he is holding one of the newly sanded window frames (done on our Berlin sander) and a stack of frames already squared off. These are now essentially complete - all 12 new frames needed for the CA&E cars. Dick also applied a primer coat to a spare seat frame to fit our TM 972 streetcar. The rest of the story - we are now getting all the seats for the interior reupholstered. This frame will go to the contractor's shop on loan so they may check that each piece is correct and will work once back and installed in the 972. Victor Humphreys worked long and hard on this project all day removing cushions and backs from the car, and many others helped along the way. That included Frank Sirinek, Mike Stauber, Bill Moran, Rich Witt, Henry Vincent, and others I probably forgot. And Rich Witt and Ralph Huber pitched in on a Track Department 'order' from Adam Robillard. We sure cut up a lot of plywood and 2x4's for a unit to store parts. Oh, did I mention that Buzz Morisette has done some preliminary work to get a MILW herald on our URTX 26640 car, and that he was sanding and continuing glazing and paint work on new windows for the MILW 01984 caboose?

Hello again. I had an idea that was (somewhat rudely, mid-sentence) dismissed in talking to a museum volunteer a few years back, but here it goes [...]

I was not around at the time. General discussion suggests that it was "pretty marginal" in a number of areas. Nigel
