Monday, April 19. 2010Wood Shop Update - April 18, 2010The Glen Springs is one of our passenger cars and we custom made 25 pieces of millwork to be installed above the window area in the car interiors. Simple shape, lots of steps to get there. Other sightings - With the coming of spring weather Victor Humphreys has been busy on our URTX 26640 boxcar. He has made a lot of progress, singlehandedly, with cleaning, priming, and painting the roof! I had occasion to visit the Steam Department and in spite of all the speculation and comments being bandied about, I would have to say I was impressed. Lots of volunteers and lots of activity with everyone seeming to know what they were doing. Large mysterious chunks of brass being machined for the decapod driver bearings, and on the Shay the new part of the front tubesheet looks to be nearly finished. The shop guys have fabricated a very heavy steel lifting beam which will be bolted to the front of the frame (where the pilot beam goes) and this will allow the locomotive to be jacked up. The front truck will be pulled forward for needed repairs and the process reversed. All that ironwork is mysterious and looks very heavy - I better stick to making sawdust. Monday, April 19. 2010Wood Shop Update - April 17, 2010First off, here is a shot of the Woodstock Woodworkers, who we were happy to host and provide a tour for. Another gorup later in the day was shown around also. Next, Buzz Morisette continues the way toward new windows for our MILW 01984 caboose. Look closely, and you will a sheet of glass in hand, and a few sash have already been glazed. Finally, a quick grab shot of Tim Peters working on brass screws which have had paint on them for well over half a century, and they are resisting clean-up. Tim is working on making new leather strap hangers for CRT 1268 and these are the salvaged screws that hold the brackets inside the car. Thursday, April 15. 2010Wood Shop Update - April 14, 2010Bruce Plaxton and John Faulhaber have just glued and assembled another new sash for the CA&E cars. Is there enough left to take accurate measurements for new cupola sash for the IC 9792 caboose? Some would debate that statement. But Rich Witt puzzles over a well rotted piece as he works to document the old parts and provide a working drawing for making new ones. Bruce Plaxton and Rich Witt trim tenons to fit on the last of 12 new sash for the CA&E cars - 4 for the 451, 4 for the 460, and 4 for the 409. Not exactly in the wood shop but in the new Barn 4 addition for the last two pics for this entry. Frank Sirinek examines a set of reconditioned seat cushions that Tim Peters 'processed' for CRT 1268. Henry Vincent is toiling to re-create some 'ruins' in northern Italy. In this case a representation of the Cassino area after bombing. These sets will be used in the upcoming WW II re-enactments over Memorial Day Weekend. Tuesday, April 13. 2010

WOW! We have been working on this car for over a year and done a lot of research. We could find no photos really close to our car number. Enter Victor Humphreys who located the below image, part of the Jay Williams Collection.
This is a shot taken December 18, 1960 in Dallas, Texas. It is clearly a shot of a sister car in the same series with all details matching our car. We really nailed the lettering as all major items match what we have applied. There are a few details regarding paint separation lines which will be easy enough to touch up. BUT - there is always a 'but' - this car displays a MILWAUKEE ROAD herald on the right side indicating they leased it from URTX. There was no evidence of any such herald on our car but after 40 years outdoors, that could have easily disappeared. So, what say you all? Apply the herald as shown (painted on, not a medallion) to our car? Monday, April 12. 2010

Comments (6) Barn 9 and Barn 11 Tour - April 10, 2010More shots from the camera of Robert Kudder. Many of these are rarely seen or noticed by the working members as they are not prone to leaving the project at hand. One of the locos on display outdoors at IRM. Above two shots in Barn 9, near the south doors, of the front end and fireman's side of MILW 265. This is almost an "ART SHOT" if it were not so sad. This is a very old ATSF boxcar, number 44043. At least it is now inside Barn 11 where some measure of protection is afforded from further deterioration. Newly restored caboose UP 3786 is also inside Barn 11. Victor Humphreys was escorting a group from Whitehall, Michigan who ventured down here to see some of our work and discuss their caboose project. Many areas warranted closer inspection. Here is the mandatory group photo in front of MILW 01984 which is receiving a lot of attention so that it may once again serve riders at IRM. Note that Barn 11 is not open to the general public at this time. On Sunday we were visited by a 'delegation' from Logans Mill, Wisconsin who are involved in a MILW caboose restoration and again we were questioned about our techniques and were happy to show them around.

Comments (2) Milwaukee Electric L4 Update - April 10, 2010Here is a shot from the camera of Robert Kudder of the old car shop area in Barn 4. New finish paint is now on the second set of all new footboards constructed in the wood shop by Buzz Morisette. In the background see a stack of refinished windows destined for CA&E 319. I was not around at the time. General discussion suggests that it was "pretty marginal" in a number of areas. Nigel

No, it will not be necessary to hold any of the work waiting for the plow to be turned, end for end. Weather will be the major factor, but there will [...]
