Another productive day. Richard Schauer, Wally Unglaub and I started by pushing the SF 614 to the front door of the Hoffman Garage. This allowed the battery compartment door to clear the coach next to it and allowed us access to install the brand new battery. Once completed we moved upstairs. Several weeks ago, Richard and I replaced the trolley bases on the roof of the coach. Today, it was time to replace the poles, which had to be done outside. The three of us mustered up the strength once again to push the back half of the coach outside the garage. The poles went on without too much of a struggle. While I took a couple hours away to video the 749 dedication (Nice job Gwen – you put on a GREAT show!!! The 749 looks FANTASTIC!!!!), Richard found two good retrievers, installed rope on them, tied the ropes to the poles and it was ready for action. After the dedication, we used the stinger to put power to the coach. After the inevitable troubleshooting, we were able to run it back into the Hoffman Garage. Richard has been slowly but surely replacing trolley rope on many of the coaches. Today it was the 4020. We still have a few more to do, but he’s made a nice dent in that little project.

Comments (0) URTX 26640 Update - June 16, 2010Let's start this entry focusing on the plug door on the north side. Roger Hugg is back in the area and helped with placement of some of the patterns for the lettering on the plug door Of course we managed to paint all this black lettering. How does it look? Newly uncovered photo evidence made us decide to add a MILW herald to each side. Buzz Morisette and Victor Humphreys are laying out the masks for the north side. Buzz has started to apply the first coat of red for the herald on the north side. The masks are applied to the south side of the car and Victor is lightly sanding/scuffing the white area which will soon see red paint. It doesn't take long for Buzz to move to the south side and begin painting the red areas. Thursday, June 17. 2010
GN 70104 Update - June 16, 2010 Posted by Robert Kutella

Comments (2) GN 70104 Update - June 16, 2010There was good weather yesterday so much of the work outdoors resumed, on several fronts. John Faulhaber is tracing data for the GN hopper before we remove all evidence of the existing with sandblasting. We are reviewing all data documented so far, and scouring through layers of existing paint and crud to reveal old paint and letterring. The first solid evidence of the reporting marks and numbers are starting to show through. Victor Humprheys and John Faulhaber stand proudly before the area defining GN and 70104. There was no trace of this before their hard work and careful sanding. You need to be part detective, part research specialist, and part archeologist to suceed here. Monday, June 14. 2010Wood Shop Update - June 13, 2010There were a lot of projects being worked on yesterday, I think I will just lump them here in a Wood Shop post. The last ceiling lamp fixture for the Sand Springs 68 seemed to have some damage. A little tricky to do, but we got it dis-assembled enough to make repairs. The coiled wire in the image needs to be re-soldered to the outside of the copper lamp cup. It did not happen yesterday since the correct tools were not available. George Clark is almost done stripping off the old siding from the Lake Shore Electric 810. The nests behind this section seem to indicate there were some hitchikers along the way. Thanks to Jeff Calendine from the steam shop, who stopped by the woodshop and volunteered to help mill slots in the new rails and stiles for the depot door project. What to do when you have two new doors to be worked on, and three volunteers? For the ME 28, they all crowd in on one of them! Left to right, Norm Krentel, Jeff Brady, and Dan Fenlaciki Jon Fenlaciki has almost singlehandedly taken on the task of cleaning and fixing all of the brass sashed windows for CA&E 451. The heavy rains in the afternoon put a damper on that, so he switched to cleaning and remounting window hardware for the four new drop sash. They are all brass covered with layers of paint and years of oxidation. But Jon knows the secret ingredients to bring back the luster - Brasso and Elbow Grease! Sunday, June 13. 2010Wood Shop Update - June 12, 2010We had to switch gears today, from the planned work, due to some pretty impressive morning thunderstorms. So, inside to the shop! Thanks to Dick Lukin who came out to work in the shop today. Here he is working on the sign box frame and several new window sash for CA&E cars 409 and 460. We also began cutting parts for a new depot door, mentioned in earlier Blog entries. Victor Humphreys is gatthering the completed blanks for the rails and stiles. Saturday, June 12. 2010

Comment (1) Rio 1889 open car arrivesThursday, June 10. 2010Wood Shop and Other News - June 9, 2010These are two views of some of the roof details on Sand Springs 68. Work continued to replace a clerestory window in this area, a side window replacement, and two of the remaining light fixtures were mounted. Rich Witt was laboring to complete more drop sash, newly made for the CA&E 409. And Bob Milhaupt was out working in the steam department. He came by the wood shop to have us splice a repair into a leather drive belt for a threading machine. Let us not forget Ed Oslowski. He and Ray Bellock were both in Barn 4 working to complete details on CNS&M 749, prior to its dedication and unveiling on June 19. You will not want to miss this event. |

I was not around at the time. General discussion suggests that it was "pretty marginal" in a number of areas. Nigel
