Thursday, June 10. 2010Freight Department and Other News - June 9, 2010 Brake Hose We have been working on caboose ICG 199458 to maintain it and return it to train service. This is one end of a flexible train line hose which is failing and needs to be replaced. The fairly unusual (for IRM) arrangement is necessitated by a cushion underframe on the canoose and the train line needs some flex and give as the coupler and draft gear silde in or out.  Brake Hose The other end.  Welders Helper The group of Wednesday Special Projects guys are working on the recently acquired CB&Q smoothside baggage car. Bill Leider is setting up for Neil S to do some welding repairs. Bill was also working to repair bodywork on the car.  Welding Neil Schwingbeck is welding on one of the end door frames.  The Roof One of the newer guys on the crew is working on rust and deterioration on part of the roof. Meanwhile Victor Humphreys painted some more of the URTX 26640 roof and re-did one of the corner posts on the car. But he was too fast for me and completed those tasks before I could snap a pic. Then he moved on the IC 9792 caboose and was removing the crumbling cupola windows. Thursday, June 10. 2010CCW 300 Update - June 9, 2010 Framing Pete Galayda is continuing on this large project. He has moved to the second end of the locomotive and has cleaned and primed the steelwork in this photo. John Nelligan looks on (supervises) from inside the cab. Pete has also completed a fairly extensive re-build and restoration of the roof mounted fusebox.  Mysteries Meanwhile John Nelligan continues to delve into the mysteries of electrical schematics and wiring. After the locomotive arrived at IRM there was the usual flurry of activity and this resulted in several rats nests of disconnectied wire and cable with no documentation of about what went where and what any of them do. Wednesday, June 9. 2010Monday, June 7. 2010Wood Shop Update - June 6, 2010 Sign Box Rich Witt made a rare Sunday visit to the shop and fit all the thin beading strips needed to mount the glass. Then later, he proceeded to begin applying the first coat of finished red paint, since this is slated for CA&E 409. George Clark was working on the Lake Shore Electric 810, I managed some more repair work on the SS 68, Kevin Tudor and family glazed two windows for the C&IM coach, and we also did a clipper lacing splice on a leather drive belt for the steam shop. Monday, June 7. 2010ME 28 Update - June 6, 2010 The Door Ray Schmid was busy mounting a lot of the many hardware and trim items for the new baggage door, number two.  The Door And Jeff Brady was also carefully measuring, drilling holes and getting everything mounted. Sunday, June 6. 2010Freight Car and Other News - June 5, 2010 Hopper Repairs Our skilled 'master of metalwork', Mile Alterio, has been working his magic on our hopper GN 70104. Here, Victor Humphreys and John Faulhaber inspect the new tack board holders, straightened grab irons, and other work, including new brake bleed levers. Other freight car work included completing wood work on four new windows for IC 9792, with the help of John Faulhaber. Now they are off to the paint shop. Dodging rain showers, Victor Humphreys completed painting the roof on the URTX 26640 boxcar.  Pilot Two 'visiting firemen' were on hand to toil on the Michigan Electric 28. Here, Terry Borden is working on the catcher/pilot which was fabricated last year. With assistance form Walt Staffa, the beast was hung and in place, later in the day.  Illuminating Eric Lorenz continued work on CTS 4223. The headlight housing has been installed and here the fitting of the light itself proves troublesome. Later the crew worked on final mounting of the tail/stop lights on the rear, and then more work on the new doors. We finally found some time to work on the SS 68 and a new replacement window was fitted to the car opening, as well as some minor repairs to the window posts and paintwork on the upper sash. Friday, June 4. 2010CA&E 319 painting update Red and Gray completed Jim Followell and his helpers finished painting the gray this past Wednesday and the red was completed today. Sometime tomorrow the 319 will be moved out of the diesel shop back over to barn 8, and the 409 will be brought into the diesel shop. To continue this aggressive restoration project with lettering and painting trucks and underframe accessories, additional monies and donations are still needed.
