Comments (0) CCW 300 Update - March 23, 2011Here is a long overdue update on our Mc Guire Cummings steeplecab locomotive from Iowa. Rest assured that Pete Galayda and his crew are working on this project every week, in the shop throughout the winter months. Here is shot of Gerry Dettloff, (trust me, that is him behind the sparks, under the locomotive with the cutting torch), removing some badly deteriorated electrical conduit which could no longer be unscrewed at its threaded connections. This is part of the ongoing process of rewiring the locomotive as the detective work by John Nelligan proves how the system needs to work. Gerry Dettloff and John Nelligan are assembling a rebuilt and restored steel cage on the walkway beside the hood. This cage was part of the design by the builder, to house and hold seven grid boxes, part of the control system. With the boxes installed and wired, it will receive a protective steel screen. The cab, space under the hoods, and under the frame are crammed full of things, so the builder chose to mount the grids on the walkway on top of the frame. I suppose that would restrict a crew member trying to exit the cab and quickly get to a retriever, but there is no cab door in that corner anyway. With thanks to Pete Galayda for the pics and update. Michigan Electric 28 - Update March ... Posted by Ray Schmid

Comment (1) Michigan Electric 28 - Update March 20, 2011Work on the Michigan Electric Co. car 28 continues. The usual Sunday team is continuing to work on the rear platform of the car. The team consists of Norm Krentel, Jeff Brady, and Ray Schmid. This Sunday we were joined by Dan Fenlaciki. This winter the ME 28 team has been actively working on the interior of the car’s rear platform to finish it in preparation for a new floor. This week's tasks were focused on installing the two traps that cover the left-hand and right-hand steps leading up into the rear platform. The picture below shows the newly painted and installed right-hand trap latched in the up position. The trap was installed by Jeff and Ray.
In service, these traps were operated by the conductor to allow passengers access to the car. Since this is a single-ended car, the front has a baggage compartment and thus has no traps and passenger steps. The traps are normally latched in the down position along with closed side doors when the car is in motion. When closed, the traps provide additional interior floor space over the steps and seal out the weather. When in a station, the traps are latched in the up position for passengers to enter or leave the car. On Friday, March 18th, Ray Schmid painted the two traps green so that they would have time to dry before Sunday's installation. In the picture below the left-hand trap is closed to cover the steps leading into the car. In the future, the top of the trap will be covered with a ribbed rubber mat.
In the pictures below the right-hand trap has been installed and Jeff Brady is aligning the trap seats so that the trap is level when closed. Not shown, Norm Krentel was enlarging a bolt hole for the left-hand trap seat. The trap will latch to the seat when in the down position so it does not open while the car is in motion. Note that when “up” the traps do not latch to the side doors like in the #1 Standing on the steps
#2 - Looking down on the trap opening
Not shown, Dan Fenlaciki was busy in the wood shop polishing the numerous window lifts that will be mounted to the restored side sashes in the future. Thanks Dan! Next week’s activity will be focused on installing the rear train door threshold. Also, preparations for resuming work on the roof. All pictures taken by Ray Schmid.

Comments (2) TMS Project News - March 20, 2011It is not too late to have your donation matched. We have previously noted that $4000 has been pledged to match your donations, but now for the GOOD NEWS! Another generous donor has come forward with matching money, so now the total is $8000 in matching funds for you to take advantage of. Here is a view of a complete wheel and axle set, still in the St. Louis Car Co. EIB design truck. I do not believe these images have been published before and they illustrate the existing wheels in more detail. The plan is to have the worn compromise wheel profiles renewed so that the two cars can reliably and safely operate on our railroad. Please send in a donation, large or small, and it will be matched, effectively doubling the total as we gather funds for the outside contracted work. Wouldn't it be nice to be sitting inside the TM 972, riding these newly upholstered and restored seats, with the window open and the fresh air blowing in? Yes, it will be possible with your help. Please send a donation to fund RTMS at Illinois Railway Museum Box 427 Union, IL 60180
Sunday, March 13. 2011CTS 4223 - March 12, 2011Our Cleveland Transit PCC car came outdoors yesterday in a move from Barn 2 to Barn 8. THANKS to Randy Hicks who shared these images of his. As you can see remarkable progress has been made during recent months to get this car painted in Cleveland colors - for the first time in decades! As you can see the interior still needs a little work. Thanks again Randy for the eye candy! I wonder where he gets all that energy? Friday, March 4. 2011
The TMS Project - March 4, 2011 Posted by Robert Kutella

Comments (3) The TMS Project - March 4, 2011First, you will look at the title and say "What is that?" Well, TMS is shorthand for TWO MILWAUKEE STREETCARS. Those of you that are IRM members should by now have received the latest Rail & Wire and seen the centerfold in COLOR. Nice job from the Editors! For those that read here and are not members, we still need your help. We have two trolley cars that once ran in Milwaukee and which have had a LOT of work done over the years to cosmetically put them in top shape. They are the TMER&T 972 and the CNS&M 354. Both of those cars originally ran on St Louis EIB trucks, although the ones under 354 were incomplete. Decades ago the decision was made to borrow those same design trucks from our second Milwaukee streetcar, the 966, and use them for the 354. In this image we see the 966 in service in Milwaukee. And in this image the 354 sitting at Union with those same trucks underneath it. This particular shot did not make the cut in the newsletter article. In the early days both of these cars ran in service on our railroad but as the physical plant grew we standardized track geometry to match the larger portion of our collection with AAR full profile treads and flanges. This gives us the freedom to run most of our large interurbans, diesel trains, steam trains, passenger cars, and freight cars almost interchangably. But these trucks from Milwaukee have some subtleties which cause problems running through switches and over specialwork, so the two cars have largely been sidelined. We are well into a lot of the engineering work and are talking to vendors with a solution in mind. If successful, it will be less costly and simpler than full wheel replacement - which we have done on a lot of the Chicago Surface Lines equipment. This is where you all can help. We need donations (restricted of course) to the fund RTMS and we believe we have a realistic estimate (plus or minus) and the goal is achievable. So, with your help the next steps should be undertaken this year - as soon as final quotes are in from the vendors, and your money is on hand. This is the real deal, and your donations will MAKE THIS HAPPEN. BUT WAIT!!! Every one of your dollars will go TWICE as far. Sponsors of the project have committed funds in the form of a matching pledge, to add one dollar to EVERY one of your dollars. That is better than the late night TV commercials since you pay no shipping and handling and the fund will grow more quickly. I will try to keep you updated with posts on this, progress made, both good news and those pesky surprises, and have created a new BLOG category titled Two Milwaukee Streetcars. For those of you not familiar with our Blogs, go to the Categories on the right hand side. If there is a plus in the small square box to the left of the root category name, click on that to expand the main category. The root category for these entries is Electric Car Department. Scroll down to the specific topic and click on that. It will act as a filter to only show those posts in THAT category. So if you miss checking in for a few days, you can streamline your display and not miss anything. ALL ABOARD! |

I was not around at the time. General discussion suggests that it was "pretty marginal" in a number of areas. Nigel
