This was another of the Freight Car Department 'milestone' goals accomplished, as each year we race the calendar to beat old man winter.
Buzz Morisette, Bob Kutella, and Victor Humphreys are on the roof of this boxcar, to spray paint the first coat of finish enamel on the roof, thus protecting the primer from the ravages of oncoming winter.
Buzz and Victor are at the A end, finishing up the tough areas around the roofwalk and laterals.
It was a very long day for the three of us, but here is the result. A very big change in appearance for anyone tall enough to see it. In this one season, about half the area of the boxcar sides, ends and roof have been restored, primed and painted!
Lorne Tweed continued working on the interior of the front end so that all work in this area is ready for the new windows. Metal repairs, priming and painting are done now.
Alex Randow was too quick for my camera as he completed removing all old paint, sanding metal surfaces smooth, and priming of this large piece.
Ed Grzesik and Rod Turner are working on the window post caps, parts that need to be repaired to complete side window installation. Here is one that has had new metal welded in place after removing rusted out sections.
Nancy Ring has taken on the challenge of cleaning up old corrosion on the side window sash. So far, there has not proven to be an easy way of doing this. Instead, a lot of painstaking hand work is required.

Rich Witt is putting the finishing touches on the fourth CA&E window he has reconditioned. Next job? Bring it on!
Tim Peters completed the planned window change out for CRT 1268. Here he going through the process of fitting and trimming each sash to the opening.
Ray Schmid and Jeff Brady are manning a home made steam generator as Ray slides in a wood slat for the end roof of Michigan Electric 28. Some of the curves on the end cannot be bent without this additional step.
Frank Sirinek has gone quietly about his business; largely staying beneath the radar as he restores Kansas City Public Service 755. A lot of the windows have recently been changed out, and there is remarkable progress on the interior painting and finish work. Cold temperatures, strong winds, and a steady drizzle which became a downpour did not discourage Frank from using a needle chipper to remove paint from two more interior panels.
Roger Kramer was on hand in the shop, cleaning up a passenger car end gate for the Pullman Car John Mc Loughlin, to be primed and painted.

It would be rather difficult to operate an 11,000 Volt AC locomotive on our 600 Volt DC wire.
