Wednesday, November 27. 2013Happy Thanksgiving !Happy Turkey Day to all the friends and supporters of IRM! Here are a couple of equipment pictures that haven't seen the light of day for a few years. Thought it would be interesting to show the restoration efforts on both pieces. In another 10 or so years they will be complete and operational.... with you help. Remember to send in your year end donation gifts to any rolling stock fund. AND........more news coming up about building storage barns. Sunday, November 24. 2013RI 2612 update 11-24-13
Nigel stated in the Steam blog, 20 degrees keeps you inside and if you do happen to walk outside, well, "Man is it cold." The coach department does not have the luxury of a heated facility or for that matter even an unheated shop. In spite of the miserable weather a few members have been working on the "project." We have two propane heaters that we can use and it actually warms the coach to workable temperature. Here are a few of the latest developments for middle November.
Paul Cronin has removed more rusted metal from the end of the car Now we need to purchased replacement steel Tuesday, November 19. 2013

Comments (2) Mr. Windy Sunday - Nov. 17th, 2013 - Passenger Car UpdateMike McCraren was working on peeling carpeting off walls in the Pacific Peak in the streamliner set. Mike Baksic and Jack Biesterfeld were putting a wall back up in the Boston and Maine #1094 wooden cafe-coach. Jon Habegger, Shelly Vanderschaegen and Kevin Kreibs finished the second coat of paint on the ceiling of the second Exhibit Car. Buzz Morisette was a busy guy in the Ely dining room over the course of three days last week. He epoxied the wood left on the ceiling to make it stronger, and then cut the braces to fit. He dry fit the braces and penciled in where to put the bolts then drilled holes through both pieces of wood, bolted them, and then primed them. John McKelvey finished one last seat back for the DM&IR #84 car before flying south for the winter with all the other Snowbirds. Sunday, November 17. 20132612 update, 11-7-13
This blog entry should now bring the reader almost up to date on the RI 2612 restoration. Next time I'll take a picture of the western exterior end of the coach to show you more of our hard work. Our combined efforts are paying off. Still much work to do but there is a "light at the end of the tunnel". PLEASE CONSIDER JOINING THE CREW? Please join us any Wednesday or Saturday in back of barn 3!! Are you considering a year end IRM donation? Please think of the coach dept in your giving. We in the coach dept have increased our efforts to accomplish more this 2013 year. Why not help us meet our goals with a donation to the Steam Passenger Coach Fund!! Thank you Roger

Sunday, November 10th Passenger Car ... Posted by Pauline Trabert

Comments (2) Sunday, November 10th Passenger Car Department UpdateIt could have been one of the last really nice days for 2013 on Sunday the 10th and a lot of work moved forward that day. Inside the second Exhibit Car ceiling painting was continued by Shelly Vanderschaegen, Kevin Kreibs and Jon Habegger. Two coats of paint will be applied to the ceiling. John McKelvey worked in the Barn 4 shop on seat bottoms from the smoking section of the Duluth Missabe & Iron Range Railway #84 coach. He is reupholstering them in a leather-look vinyl once the basic repair work is done. Jon Habegger took a photo inside the DM&IR car smoking section to show some of the completed seat covers in place. It was completely dark in the car when the image was captured. Buzz Morisette is making progress in the Ely dining room ceiling repair. Because of previous repair work done on the car, Buzz explained that the curve of the roof has been changed. He is correcting for this cosmetically as much as possible but said a new roof would be required to make it right and that would be a tremendously time consuming and costly project. Milwaukee Road Dynamometer project leader Warren Newhauser worked with new X-5000 volunteers Dan LaKemper and son Brian on getting mechanical equipment operational while Chuck Trabert sealed the second bay window. The car is expected to be weathertight this winter. As Warren and Chuck worked outside the Dynamometer car the streamliner cars were switched from their temporary mainline position back to Yard 5. Mark Gellman helped with switching moves to get the streamliner cars back in their spot in Yard 5. It takes a series of moves to get the train set out of and into Yard 5 and it took about an hour of steady switching to complete the work. After the streamliner cars were back in place, Mike Baksic, Mark Gellman, and Jon Habegger worked another two hours putting extension cords back in place and hooking up heaters so the cars could be warm for meetings.

Even with the approach of colder weather we keep on working in and around the 2612. Recently, we have resumed the removal of the second stair frame. It's not in as bad a shape as the other one but the support brackets that hold it on to the car need to be replaced. Soooooo..... off it came with the help of Paul Cronin. He, along with Gary Sherman and Mark Gellman have removed much of the rusted out steel on this one side. Now, the trick is to replace it with new steel and rebuilt stairs before the running season begins. I'll keep you updated on our progress. My thanks to the crew of Paul, Gary, Dan, Loraine, Jane, Jan and Mark. Don't forget to send your donations in for the next barn buildings, 13 and 14 . Let's build a couple of barns before we consider other grandiose projects. Roger
