Here are some developing projects from barn 4. I recently receive a note from one of our members who now lives in, Yes, in Hawaii. What a nice place to retire. His request was for some recent info regarding the ME interurban that Jeff Brady and Norm Krentel have been working on. So here is a small update. Included is a few other views and some of the project volunteers.
Side view Please observe all the holes. They all had to be drilled before that huge steel piece could be installed. This is the other side. Please notice all the work that has been completed. Thats all new steel that first had to be fitted into place before the riveting could begin. Pete Galayda has been restoring and improving the appearance of the Illinois Terminal Class B unit. So far he has repainted all the windows and now plans to repaint eight doors. Nice job! An interior shot of the Cleveland PCC Can any of you remember what it use to look like when the project was first started many years ago. WHAT a difference. Beautiful job guys. Here is the team working on the Cleveland PCC. Lorne Tweed Ed Waytula and Eric Lorenz. There just admiring a newly painted sign holder for the PCC Bob Olsen and Jeff Button are working on one of 40 some windows for the GBW 109. They all need to have the paint removed so that we can varnish the quarter sawn oak window frames. Sunday, January 28. 2018L&N 314 Alco FA update
Here is a quick update on our Alco FA L&N 314 (currently LIRR 604). Our volunteer electrician, Dan Currens, has been busy reinstalling various electrical components back in the electrical cabinet and is slowly beginning to wire everything back up. However, additional funding is needed to keep the project moving along at a steady pace. Your donations to the Diesel Locomotive Restoration Fund are what keep projects like this and other projects like the Rock Island 4506 restoration going. Your help is invaluable to these efforts! Thank you in advance for your support!
Thursday, January 25. 2018UP 428 Challenge Grant Extended
We have reached the matching grant goal of $5,000.00 for the UP 428 steam locomotive. Since there has been such a genuine and increased interest in this project the donor has decided to increase the match to $8,000 and extend the match time till February 28, 2018! Many of you are interested in financially helping with this project. Here is your incentive and opportunity! Remember to either send in a check or call to the office and make a contribution to the UP 428 Challenge Grant. The office number is 815-923-4391. Here are a few pictures of recent progress. Work has already increase on the 428 since this was originally announced! Your gift does make a difference!
These next eight pictures are of last weekend's developments. Part of the steam team poured hot hot Babbitt into the cross head guides of the engine. There are four of them. This is just the first one to be poured. Unfortunately, I was not around to take a photo of the actual pouring of the hot material into the guide. But, arriving at the museum yesterday, Tom Schneider show me the results of the successful pour. B-t-w, we could send some of these projects to outside venders
but in this way we are teaching the next generation how to repair and restore these "iron horse" locomotives. I will certainly keep you informed on the progress! Thanks again for all you donations and interest! Roger Kramer

Another cold week here at Irm but that does stop the progress of building and repairing pieces for the historic equipment and facilities. I didn't cover everything in the car shop but got some of the highlights. Take a look! While your viewing this report please realize that this heated barn 4 area is very important to the museum. Not only does it provide a warm area for the electric car department projects but it also provides for the freight car, coach and the wood shop. Wouldn't it be a great improvement if the car barn 4 was heated. Stay tuned! There is a movement from the members to build a heated combined shop.
This also belongs to the 451. Its the front pilot to the 451 Once both the stairs and pilot are installed the 451 might be used in limited operation. This is a window that I just painted . Its from the Mount Harvard and should be installed this Spring. Jack worked on the GBW 109 even without heat. We do have many, many dedicated volunteers willing to work on their project even in the cold weather. |
