speaking of which, CNW 4160 should be painted into its original build number, 1266. so, in case 938 does operate, 938 can be at one end and 1266 can be at the other.
Hello Raffi If you would like to have the ex-CNW 4160 repainted into the RI colors, please figure on about $35k to repaint it. Did you ever see pictures of push-pull with steam on one end and diesel on the other? This practice was never used on the Rock Island! Roger
Hello Josh Yes, you were right! I wouldn't call it a restoration but an inspection. It was in the shop for about two months while tubes were removed and tender and cab painted. But it is now outside and the Frisco 1630 is now in the shop getting more upgrades. Send in lots of $ to proceed for a full restoration. Nigel mentioned, a few Blogs ago, it's estimate of at least $500k or more to begin the work; thus my Challege! Roger

Per Nigel Bennett regarding 938 on 12/8/14, "#938 was brought in for some cosmetic work". He has expressed in the past that restoring 938 would be very expensive and time consuming. He described any restoration as requiring "quite a few man years of skilled work". IRM needs some serious donations for this project to get off the ground. Nick
Hello Raffi I rather doubt the steam dept would sell that tender. First, how much is it worth? Even the scrap value is not worth that much. No, you need someone to step up and lead the fund raising just like someone has done for the Electroliner. That gentleman has done a great job! Roger
I don't believe there are any plans to sell the KCS 759 tender. The tender itself has a rich history, being the tender of one of the KCS's 2-8-8-0's as well as playing the role of the auxiliary tender for the GTW 0-8-0's working in Sterling, IL at the scrapyard. Who knows, someone might want to restore it as a backup auxiliary Tender for the Steam Department. Only time will tell.
Interesting enough, it appears the SW1 4804 seen in the photo of the engineer climbing into the CRIP 630 survives today as NIRC 2. Still running on Chicago Rails some 4 and a half decades later.
The photo with unit 642 rounding a curve in June 1978 is at Blue Island with the train coming off the Suburban line through Beverly heading south about to cross the river behind the photographer.
