Will the museum remain open after 5;00 on Saturday to be able to enter for nighttime or must you be there earlier. It is a Jewish Holiday that ends at sundown
#1 Len Marcus on 2010-09-10 11:08
The gate will remain open after 5pm, in reality it'll be open until the parking lot is empty.
#1.1 James Kolanowski on 2010-09-10 14:56
Unless things have changed since last year, it is not a requirement that one attend during the day to be able to go at night. My mother and I are going to go to the Saturday night gig and then back for the grand finale on Sunday.

I understand that Frisco 1630 will be hydro-tested for the FRA inspector today. According to this website,, if the inspector finds nothing wrong, he could approve it for operation. If this is the case, is it possible that we will finally see 1630 return to service for Member's Weekend? I am a big steam buff and rode on Nickel Plate 765 at the train festival in Owosso Michigan last July.
#2 Nathan (Homepage) on 2010-09-11 17:39
Based on the blog information I would say that the steam trains will not be running this year.
#2.1 Jeremy Wdowicki on 2012-09-11 11:50
Are the Illinois Central electrics, and South Shore interurbans no longer running for this weekend?
#3 Bill L. on 2010-09-13 20:55
They were not scheduled to operate this year.
#3.1 James Kolanowski on 2010-09-13 22:20
Any chance the CA&E cars might run Sunday as well?
#4 Ken MacLeod on 2010-09-15 07:21
Its all based on crew availability, possible, but unlikely for Sunday.
#4.1 James Kolanowski on 2010-09-16 10:57
I've never been to the museum. Are there train rides for children?
#5 Don on 2010-09-15 20:26
The demonstration railroad has train rides for everyone, as well as many car barns of equipment on display.
#5.1 James Kolanowski on 2010-09-16 10:59
I take my two girls age 4 and 6 they enjoy the rides.
#5.2 David Fink on 2012-09-04 15:12
Will they tow out the 801-802 Electroliner for display?
#6 Chuck on 2010-09-15 20:36
Folks, I have not seen anything about the michigan Electric 28 in a while? Can you post a picture or word about what work they have been doing this summer? Ted Miles IRM Member
#7 Ted Miles on 2010-09-16 10:54
Around what time will C&NW 411 and 6847 begin operation?
#8 Bill L. on 2010-09-16 15:39
Will any of the steam engines run this weekend
#9 scott on 2010-09-17 15:40
I've just read this whole page and noticed that any questions about STEAM have been totally ignored. This place started as a trolly museum and I guess it pretty much still is. Also all these messages are dated 2010.
#9.1 Tom Wham on 2012-08-31 16:56
You might want to check out the excellent blog that's maintained to update the status of 1630 and 428. The FRA, in the interests of safety, have mandated strict requirements for live steam apparatus. The 1630 and 428 are being restored to meet these requirements. This is being done almost exclusively with volunteer labor. I'm certain that IRM would welcome your donation of either your time, or money to speed the process along.
#9.1.1 Kurt Schlieter on 2012-09-02 09:58
Steam is not ignored... you are looking in the wrong place. Check the IRM Steam Department blog. Nigel Bennett of the Steam Team has been updating progress in the steam shop weekly, and it is a very interesting read.

Will the Electroliner be outside for photo opportunities?
#10 Mike Mioduszewski on 2011-04-11 07:40
I notice the equipment list is for 2010. Will the list be the same for 2011?
#11 Alex G on 2011-07-14 09:22
This is the old one for 2010. The 2011 info and list will be posted as soon as we have a better idea of what will be available to operate.
#11.1 James Kolanowski on 2011-07-14 13:06
For the Railfan weekend on the 17th - 18th - what date and times will the West End Jazz band be performing?
#12 Bob Hillman on 2011-09-08 12:04
Bob, they will be performing throughout the day, there are no specific times. Occasionally they will perform at the Central Pavilion, other times on one of the streetcars.
#12.1 James Kolanowski on 2011-09-10 03:58
For the night operations, will there be "staged"or "posed" scenes for photography, or is it more a matter of just getting around doing your own lighting etc? Will patrons be allowed to bring lighting equipment etc on to the grounds? Thank you.
#13 Paul Burgess on 2011-09-09 12:33
Paul, there won't be much in the way of staging and posed scenes, we'll be operating the trains most of the night for rides. However, there might be times where certain trains end up in certain places that might make a good photo. You are welcome to bring your own lighting equipment, you may get some time for photos before we start night operations at 8pm.
#13.1 James Kolanowski on 2011-09-10 04:03
Will the bi-levels be running? Why isn't 9911 pulling the silver/zephyr train? I was hoping to see the two, and I am unable to go to the often museum because of where I live.
#14 Nick D. (Homepage) on 2011-09-11 11:26
Will any of the Illinois Termainal or pantograph equipment operate on Saturday?
#15 James on 2011-09-13 22:07
Will there be a BBQ tomorrow (Saturday, Sept. 17th) as there was at last year's museum showcase weekend?
#16 Michelle on 2011-09-16 18:34
Want to thank all the IRM People who WORKED their tails off this weekend and some who slept there to make this weekend happen!!!!!! Thank you very much Got some great pictures and video thanks again Craig
#17 Craig S on 2011-09-18 20:47
I noticed there is a two coach Lackwana set listed on all three sessions but with no locomtive listed to pull it. Was the set supposed to be removed when they rewrote the list for this year but was not? Is the Leviathan returning for a second run this year? Is another locomotive supposed to pull the set but the locomotive was not listed? Please answer my questions. Thanks.
#18 Andrew on 2012-08-16 16:14
Andrew, We haven't completed the list yet. We're talking about having a long heavyweight train this year and having it lit for the night trips as well. More to come over the next few weeks.
#18.1 James Kolanowski on 2012-08-16 22:50
One more thing, will the restraunt annex be open later for night operations? Thanks.
#18.1.1 Andrew on 2012-08-20 16:23
I have been wondering about a specific piece of equipment, UP 1366. It is a FM H-20-44 listed in the equipment roster, but I have not seen it in the grounds in the past. Any information in the unit would be appreciated.
#19 Nick D. on 2012-08-24 23:23
I believe that UP 1366 is currently stored in yard 13. I remember seeing it in front of Barn 10 a year or two ago. It is not in UP Armour Yellow paint so I had to run through the equipment roster to find a picture to identify this 'mystery switcher'. Jamie K. of the Diesel Department could tell you if it is anywhere close to operational.
#19.1 Mike Gorecki on 2012-08-27 17:05
It's been a year or two, but the last time I noticed 1366 it was sitting outdoors in Yard 10. I don't believe its in operational condition.
#19.2 MRZ on 2012-08-28 14:40
It's currently sitting in Yard 10, which is behind Barn 9. Currently, it is a light green color and numbered 409. I am personally interested in this unit, myself. Mainly, it needs oil cooler work and some electrical repairs.
#19.3 Jeron Glander on 2012-08-28 15:12
Please add that we plan on a working demonstration of the plow wings on our CGW X 38 snow plow, acquired earlier this year in 2012. Tentatively scheduled for 1:30 PM on 9/15. You have not seen this piece in earlier years. Bob Kutella
#20 Bob Kutella on 2012-09-02 05:35
Where is metra 308.
#21 Jacob Swanson on 2013-07-07 21:51
308 is in Barn 11 where inexplicably even members are not allowed to tread....
#22 Steve grishaber on 2013-07-08 10:52
will they ever open barn 11 and ect. to the public?
#22.1 jacob swanson on 2013-07-10 22:09
Barn 11 is setup as a display barn, however, access to the barn is not great until construction of an access road is completed. That is planned, but a little ways off yet.
#22.1.1 James Kolanowski on 2013-07-10 22:50
Is the Silver Pilot going out for any excursions this fall?
#23 Marcus Elliott on 2013-08-10 13:42
Are members allowed to camp overnite on showcase weekend, we've seen campers there in previous years?
#23.1 Bob Barger on 2013-09-01 18:50
Is there a 2013 schedule posted yet for the Showcase weekend? We've never been but my brother works for UP and I'd like to surprise him.
