Glad to see another steamer beside #1630 is getting some good work done. By the way why has #5 been out of service for more than 12 years?

Why is any locomotive out of service? ANSWER: They are very complicated machines requiring a huge investment in money and volunteer hours. In the case of the Shay it fell victim to the regulations saying that TUBE TIME ran out. The tubes are removed and new superheater flues made and ready to go in. Along the way the bottom of the front tube sheet was found to be 'wasted' and thinned. A repair involved creating a new piece and that has been welded in and riveted. The bottom of the smokebox was corroded and shot. A new piece has been fabricated and is waiting to be installed. The cylinder steam exhaust nozzle was found to be the incorrect design. The front truck mechanicals and springing are bad and work is underway to jack the locomotive up and pull that truck. A few staybolts need replacing and that is a problem with the design of any Shay, but they are working on it. The above comments and observations, just that.
