Comments (0) Electric Car Department Projects November 14, 2009Tim Peters and Richard Block were working on CTA 4146, the "baldy". Structural repairs are complete in this doorway area, and the threshold is being re-installed. Joel Arendt has taken on the role of Service Car Maintainer and he immediately brought over North Shore 714 to take advantage of the good weather (for November). He scraped, sanded, and primed a lot of the woodwork on the car upper sash windows. Yes, we need to start NOW to be ready for operations in 2010! Thursday, November 12. 2009

Comments (0) Milwaukee Streetcar 972 Update - November 11, 2009Here is some of the layout work in place to hand paint more of the lettering on this car. As when in service in Milwaukee, decals were used for the herald and numbers, and other lettering was hand painted. Here is the bright and sparkling east end with the last coat of paint having been applied on November 10. This substantially completes the painting on this car body, with the exception of some detailing and trim items. Headlight and stop light housings, ad boxes, etc. Thursday, November 12. 2009

Comments (2) Milwaukee Streetcar 972 Update - October 21, 2009The following two images win the award for the WOW FACTOR this week!! Most of you have been following this project and seen the endless hours of preparing and painting the car. The correct style and arrangement of the herald was applied to the car by Buzz Morissette. Buzz also supplied and applied the numbers. One can hardly believe the impact of these touches to a glistening, freshly painted car. Thursday, October 22. 2009

Comments (0) CRT 1268 Update - October 21, 2009Many thanks to Kirk Warner for supplying pictures taken showing progress on several different projects as of this date. These may be the last for a while as Kirk should now be on his way to sunny Florida for the winter! Tim Peters continues to show remarkable perseverance and progress on a difficult job. Here you see new canvas being draped over one of the hip roof sections. Now the canvas has been stretched, trimmed, and tacked down. Painting it will likely wait for the return of warmer weather. Wednesday, October 14. 2009Juice Fans DelightHere is a nice photo taken by and forwarded by Andrew Cornillie. Fans will immediately recognize the South Shore 803, all spiffed up with lights, number boards and markers working. I believe I saw Charlie Strong putting in some time earlier, so that this night shot would be possible. Sunday, October 4. 2009

Comments (0) Cleveland PCC 4223 Update - October 3, 2009Eric Lorenz is working on the front of the car, doing some remaining body work. You can see the tremendous difference that a coat of primer paint makes. For years we have passed this car with its 'measles' amd speckled body work, and now taking shape, we can appreciate the styling and body work. Here is the north side essentially completely in primer. Only some priming on the front remains to be completed before cold weather sets in. Friday, September 25. 2009

Comments (0) Showcase Weekend September 19 & 20, 2009I guess I will throw in a few pics with an Electric Car Department Theme, unusual and behind the scenes views. Randal Hicks and son Frank Hicks fill and test marker lights for planned night time operations. The unusual photo caption is due to software limitations of trying to use an ampersand in the caption. The South Shore 803 was brought out for display on the west leg of the wye. Paying attention to details such as mounting the marker lights really adds a finishing touch to such an effort. Wes Lloyd was enlisted as the pilot for the first revenue runs of the year for the Sand Springs 68. And that is yours truly hiding behind the farebox, as we get ready to pull out of Barn 4. Milestone Reached September 12, 2009 Posted by Robert Kutella

Comment (1) Milestone Reached September 12, 2009Yesterday we trotted out the Sand Springs 68, and we went over to the Barn 4 pit area for maintenance and inspection duties. Two relatively minor defects were noted (not real serious) along with the more routine oiling around, etc. That completed, we continued around the car line loop and back to Barn 4. Since the car first became operational at IRM after 4 decades of restoration work, I have kept a log of when and how much mileage was run. (Maybe this is a sign of age, or worse yet, obsessive compulsive disorder.) As of yesterday the Sand Springs 68 has traveled at IRM under its own power for 68 miles! Thursday, September 10. 2009

Comments (0) CSL 3142 Update September 9, 2009The previous blog post for this car showed a rebuilt motor just back from the shop. Today, the car was jacked up, the truck pulled out, and the motor re-hung in the truck frame. Dick Cubbage (hidden), Dan Fenlaciki, Stan Wdowikowski, and Mike Stauber reach in to help position the axle cap bearings as the motor is dropped into place. Thursday, September 10. 2009
Indiana Railroad 205 Update ... Posted by Robert Kutella

Comments (0) Indiana Railroad 205 Update September 9, 2009Yes, yet another car from the Indiana Railroad! (Just kidding). Frank Hicks has been steadfastly and stubbornly working on this to bring it back to its midwest roots. The roof has been patched, ventilators restored, and painted green. One side, shown here, has been needlechipped, repaired and primed, and for the first time in decades, perhaps, there are are now two bases and trolley poles on the roof. Frank Hicks sits down on the job, as he starts on some of the underbody cabinets. Thursday, September 10. 2009

Comments (0) Milwaukee Streetcar 972 Update September 9, 2009Painting work is continuing and I am sure in the back of their mind, they are worried that cold weather cannot be far away. For a change of pace, I have some pics of the interior - a lot of work has been completed in there. The purpose of these shots is to help determine the state of the upholstery on the various seats. While it looks OK a lot of it can best be described as FRAGILE. There are 20 walkover seats with the distinctive back sections. There are two 'sport model' motorman seats. There are two styles of the nicknamed 'nickle seats' which once cost only a nickle since they were not 'full service' walkover style. Both a short version and the pictured long version. Another unusual entry in the Seating Derby. 972 had two drop down benches for seating at each end. For a crowded car, those at the rear could be pulled down across the unused doorways. |
