Here the latest news on the Green Bay and Western 109. Jack Biesterfeld has been very committed working on the old wooden coach. Along with Bob Olsen they have been slowly bringing back the luster of this coach. Right how they have begun sanding and painting the ceiling. There are many worthy projects for donations and this one is one of them. Yet to consider is the exterior restoration and purchase of the correct seat frames and cushions. We might have to consider manufacturing them. We have seats from an old Lackawanna electric trailer but they are by no means correct. Estimate costs for new frames are $17,000 to $22,000.  Bob is stripping more old paint off of the wall in the area that was part of the mens bathroom.  Here is the latest interior look with the ceiling painted. Jack is continuing the painting project here in this picture. Tuesday, August 28. 2018Steam bites
Rich Thomas and his small team have been continuing the restoration of the UP 428 cab. This time his efforts are concentrating on the installation of the interior wooden side panels. During that same time the two metal floor replacements for the cab were finished and made ready for installation. The riveting team of Jerry and Stu installed about 50 rivets into both floor panels.
 Newly painted ceiling boards are being installed.  They are now all installed!  Next, setting up the metal floor to measure and fit to the locomotive frame.  The newly riveted metal floor set up for the custom fit.  A broader view.  Inside the cab again with unfinished window frames inserted to see how well they fit.  The opposite side.  Kevin Tudor spend part of his valuable vacation needlescaling both sides!  The side has already been chipped. Thanks Kevin for all your help. There are a number of other people assisting on this project but I forgot my camera at home that day.  The scraping needlescaling and priming of the wheels on one side is already finished.  Here he is brazing a new fitting onto a pipe that supplies steam for the hydrostatic lubricator of the Shay.  Dennis just completed one of the last welding projects for the Shay. |
