Tuesday, February 22. 2022Mt Harvard Restoration UpdateThis last year, 2021, was very productive with our volunteers working on various projects in and around barn 10. The Mt Harvard is a case in point. What follows is just a sampling of what has been accomplished since my last update on this sleeper.
One of the major tasks on the MT HARVARD that started in 2020 and carried over to 2021 was the restoration of all interior and exterior window frames. Counting all 40 frames to be removed inspected and repainted was by far a monumental task.
This last Spring I talked to Buzz in the wood shop and hired him to make four missing exterior window frames. Three for the Men's restroom and one for the interior hallway. He really did a fine job. Thanks Buzz. The ability to hire in-house staff to complete some tasks such as creating window frames sure expedites the work progress. Your donations to the MT HARVARD project make this possible! Friday, January 21. 2022Milwaukee Road 649 Roof ProjectThis has been the fall 2021 project, painting and protecting the roof on the Milwaukee 649. There is a lot of labor that comprises a project like this and it is almost completely painted. The eight or nine volunteers, including three from the diesel department, made it happen. My Thanks to all of you for your hard work!  The Pawnee and Milw 649 switch out of the barn. We switched the car out of barn 10 and then positioned it in the exterior scaffold to begin the work.  Tom started the roof work by needle chipping this portion.  October shows areas primed.  It is a long 85 foot car.  Gray paint applied.  Steve and Doug.  Eddie working on the end area.  More area top coated.  Ed is working on the next area.  October 20 finds Paul working on the eastern end.  Ed working on the western end.  Dale wheeling and Tom operating the chipper. The needle chipper makes the job go quicker especially in this colder weather.  Mr. Tom and his chipper He does a nice job.  Lee from the diesel department and Dave assisted us for the day.  Its either primed and or top coated on one course.  Another view.  Now its painted. Tim Allison comes out on Tuesdays so he has picked up the pace.  Tim is working on the Air conditioning hatch. There are two removable roof hatches, one on each end. It takes a lot of time, about two weeks each, just to remove the old paint and prep them for primer.  Here is one hatch primed. We apply two coats of primer.  More old paint comes off.  The final top coat.  Western end gets more attention.  Thanks to the switch crew we moved the coach inside to continue the process. A group of nine coach department volunteers have been working on the restoration of our last Rock coach 2524. It has been a gradual process, but it has gathered some momentum in the last seven months.
 Doug starts the project. Here is Doug in late June of last year and one of our 15 member volunteer staff starting the needle chipping project on the south side of the RI coach.  The next day. Before the days work is finished Doug spray primes the area.  Doug, June 22rd. Now Wednesday one of our younger volunteers Austin is showing off his chipping ability.  Austin, June 23rd. October 18, Howard has primed the entire side.  The crew. Lee, Dale, John K, John M and Tom, just part of the crew that has worked so hard on the RI 2524 restoration.  Steve Michelotte one of our volunteer welders working on the car body. Steve is cutting out potions of the car body that are rusted. We plan on welding new patches before we finally repaint the car body.  A repair patch needed here.  Old potions removed and now waiting to weld new patches. We had to move the coach outside in late November to make room for the Mt Harvard's continuing restoration. I would like to provide this coach with inside storage in the new proposed barn number 15.
