What level of work is to be done on the 101 if enough is donated?

Hello William The 101 needs lots... New tender, tubes, inspect boiler, convert firebox from oil the coal, and take readings on thickness of boiler-firebox submit to FRA. Create a form 4 is most important. A good estimate of needed donations would be $250,000. Start building the Fund! Thanks Roger

Why couldn't the firebox stay in its oil burning form? Just curious as it was run that way in the late 70`s in burning oil.

Hello Robert Please check on the history of the 101. It was a coal burner years ago. There are other reasons but I am not too knowledgeable to describe them. Thanks Roger

I believe some of the oil burning parts on the 101 have been sold to another locomotive not at the museum. But it originally burned coal so we would like to convert it back to that. But 101 needs a lot more work than other locomotives at the museum to make it operational. Most of the running gear is very worn out and will need re-building in addition to new tubes, a new tender tank, coal grates and whatever parts we find that are broken or need fixing.

what about ComEd 5?
#3 Raphael on 2015-01-30 17:46
Hello Raphael It needs to be inspected, Form 4 created then all info sent to the FRA. The real question is: Why spend so much time and $ getting this engine running when we have better candidates? It was used as a yard engine for Com Ed. We have plenty of engines that provide that service. Roger

at this rate, we may see 428 operate by the end of this year.

Hello again... No, I doubt very much if you will see 428 running this year. Maybe by 2017. The engine was worn out! It is a massive rebuild in progress. Please send your donations to 428 fund to keep the restoration on the front burner. Thanks Roger

I was reading a interesting feed on IRMList about the 428. As it was steamed up back in 2009 does that really mean it only 10 more years left before its rebuild?
#4.1.1 Robert Penn on 2015-01-31 21:30
Hi Robert. The feed was just that! A rumor feed without the facts. If you would like the correct info concerning the UP 428 please ask the curator, Tom Schneider. Thanks Roger

A little OT . I am unable to view any blog entries from any of my home network computers. I always get a Forbidden you don't have permission to access /blogs/archives/... on this server. This has been going on for a week or so. My android phone connection works fine. Any ideas? There also seems to be no way to communicate website problems from the website.

Thanks to the man behind the curtain. Magically I can now view the blogs again. I wonder whether this problem stemmed from an unsuccessful attempt to enter the spam prevention text? It would be helpful as noted if there were an email address to communicate website problems.
