Monday, June 24. 2013Wood Shop Update - June 22, 2013The same storms that rumbled through Union on Friday continued through the night and into Saturday morning. So we adjourned to inside the shop to begin the day. Lorne Tweed immediately went to work inside Cleveland Transit System 4223 installing the parts and panels needed to allow the window tracks to be installed. Eric Lorenz was on duty also working on many of the same tasks on the left hand side of the car. Look closely and you will see the first window on that side installed Victor Humphreys is in the shop installing new (old) hinges on the door to be installed on the south side of the Chicago Great Western X 38 snowplow. Earlier that morning John Faulhaber and I made four new backer inserts for John Mc Kelvey to use on the first cab chair for the plow. Bill Peterson went to work cutting about 40 pieces of wood to length for the next interior lining in the plow, sanding them and now ready for priming. When the rain let up, Paul Cronin reinstalled the roller bearing cartridge keeper castings on the ICG caboose, It quit raining and started to dry up by lunchtime so we mustered a crew and went to work outdoors on the plow roof and cupola windows. Buzz Morisette did the window framing work and Bill Peterson, Paul Cronin, Victor and I needlechipped a lot more, ejected the old metal roofwalks from the roof, painted maroon on all the vertical cupola surfaces, and primed the newly cleaned roof areas. Monday, June 24. 2013Wheel Swap - June 21, 2013Here is a post that will certainly not be the same run of the mill news. This project has been in the works for maybe a year and one half and the job was executed Friday. Jamie Kolanowski led the effort including securing replacement wheelsets. Helping were Mark Secco, Jeron Glander, Mark Sanborn, and John Brazil. Mark was instrumental in this task since the heavy lifting was done with our CNW 6363 crane, and this would not have been possible without the many days of work Mark has devoted to this piece of equipment. Pictures were furnished via e mail today from Jeron Glander and Mark Sanborn. Thanks fellas! Of course I was unable to be there, and have tried to place them roughly in time order and 'invent' some caption info. There are a lot of them, and I am sure you will see the steps, and appreciate their long day, made even longer by a line of thunderstorms which rumbled through before 10 AM. Our Commonwealth Edison 15 locomotive moved everything into place roughly as you see it here. The location is where Depot Street is crossed by the tracks leading to the Thomas boarding area. The equipment is nearly where it should be, Jamie walking beside the caboose, Mark wearing the orange safety equipment. A spreader has been rigged and the crane moved to the next adjacent track to the east to give room to work and a better angle. Oh yes, what was the project? Replacing two thin wheelsets on our Illinois Central Gulf 199458 caboose. This is still before the rain with the crew working on the truck in question. Luckily (?) both bad wheelsets were in the same truck. First step - to remove the keeper castings designed to hold the roller bearing cartridges in place in the truck frames. I guess everyone needs a title and if I was there, Mark (in orange) would be the LIFTMASTER. Here is the arrangement but that sky is looking ever more threatening. AND THEN IT RAINED AND RAINED. Here is the overall view after the line of storms had passed. Now you can see why railroads called this type of equipment the BIG HOOK. From this angle the new wheels are directly in line with the ones to be removed. All we need is a Star Wars transporter device to swap them out. What is Mark pointing at or doing? Quiz of the day allows you to furnish the best caption. Mark did this exact job for the UP before retiring and still looks very stylish in his garb. The lift has been made. With the trick frame chained to the car body, the old wheelsets simply drop out. This caboose has been out of service several years due to the poor condition of two wheelsets. Next job is to do our department inspection and lubrication. Once mechanically sound, should we operate it? It is a favorite with our train crews with the large spacious end platforms. This modern caboose was built in 1970 and the years have not been kind to the paint job, never having had enough support to be considered for storage inside a Barn. I am thinking we should recruit folks to clean it up and repaint it, and that includes the interior which is also pretty shabby and with peeling paint. Thursday, June 20. 2013Wood Shop Update - June 19, 2013I will start this entry with a few views from around the property. And I am very short of time so this will be a short entry overall. YES, another new arrival was sitting on our interchange track. As I drove by I used the telephoto setting to give you an idea of the new OHIO locomotive crane. To me, a face only a mother could love - at least from this end of it. You have probably read that we received the donation of steel poles from Dayton Ohio to facilitate an expansion of our electric trolley bus system. Here is a view west down Central Avenue. The new poles were painted, set in concrete, and received new span wire. The old bracket arms supporting the wire have been removed and the old wood poles pulled out, laying on the ground. I did not count but probably five or six sets of these steel poles from here west to the curve. For the first time in years, Charles City Western 300 came out of Barn 4 for some air. It has been moved but this time traveled to the east end of Barn 4 on Track 41. Pete Galayda and Gerry Dettloff are on the loco to install the two trolley poles. With the poles installed, Pete and John Nelligan got out the hose and washing supplies and cleaned the old girl up, real nice, ready for the big dance. I spent most of the day up on the roof of the plow with Dave Rogan, pictured here. Too bad much of what we accomplished will be all but invisible from the ground, but rest assured it is necessary and we made good progress. Notice something different in this picture? Both new cupola windows have been installed on this side!! Buzz Morisette installed the window we mention above, and he gives us a friendly wave as he continues to work inside the cupola. The window to the right (rear of the plow) is fixed while the front one is a slider and may be opened. There are two operator positions up in the plow cab and they used recycled old passenger car seats. John McKelvey has the first one in the shop right now and here it is upside down on a horse, as he disassembles the pieces. I mentioned I was out sunning myself on the roof of our snowplow so I got few pics of the shop work. But I saw Rich Witt at our router rabbeting out pieces for the CA&E First Aid Boxes he is making.
