Comments (0) Showcase Weekend September 19 & 20, 2009I guess I will throw in a few pics with an Electric Car Department Theme, unusual and behind the scenes views. Randal Hicks and son Frank Hicks fill and test marker lights for planned night time operations. The unusual photo caption is due to software limitations of trying to use an ampersand in the caption. The South Shore 803 was brought out for display on the west leg of the wye. Paying attention to details such as mounting the marker lights really adds a finishing touch to such an effort. Wes Lloyd was enlisted as the pilot for the first revenue runs of the year for the Sand Springs 68. And that is yours truly hiding behind the farebox, as we get ready to pull out of Barn 4. Comments (0) URTX 26640 Update September 20, 2009More progress this week as we race the upcoming cold weather, and this despite losing some of the crew to illness. Get well soon, Kirk! At last, the remaining lettering has been applied to the plug door. And the door lettering completes work on the right side of the car. Fully restored and lettered! All the siding work is done on the left side and nail heads cleaned and primed. Victor Humphreys is sanding the right half of the left side - if that makes any sense. Note that the right side and left side are determined when standing at the B end of the car and looking back toward the car. And at days end, despite taking time off to enjoy the Showcase Weekend Operations, a committed Victor Humphreys had completed the final coat of orange paint on half the car. UTLX 17222 Update September 13, 2009 Posted by Robert Kutella

Comments (0) UTLX 17222 Update September 13, 2009Visitors always seem to enjoy seeing our volunteers working, and are often fascinated as we apply the lettering. Bob Kutella stops to explain the process to two visitors. Here is the journal packing information applied in our 'as built' restoration of this car. Well, what often passes for a builders plate on freight cars is a proprietary stencil applied by the company and plant where it was built. Here is a tediously drawn and cut paper stencil in place. The information is applied to the center beam framing of the car. Capacity and Light Weight data are being applied. And then the paintwork is touched up with a very small brush. It is the goal to reproduce the look of the stencils as applied 72 years ago. Additional bars are left in the more or less fragile paper stencil, and these must be painted in by hand with a very small brush. But not all of them! |

I was not around at the time. General discussion suggests that it was "pretty marginal" in a number of areas. Nigel
