Visitors always seem to enjoy seeing our volunteers working, and are often fascinated as we apply the lettering. Bob Kutella stops to explain the process to two visitors.
Here is the journal packing information applied in our 'as built' restoration of this car.
Well, what often passes for a builders plate on freight cars is a proprietary stencil applied by the company and plant where it was built. Here is a tediously drawn and cut paper stencil in place.
The information is applied to the center beam framing of the car.
Capacity and Light Weight data are being applied.
And then the paintwork is touched up with a very small brush. It is the goal to reproduce the look of the stencils as applied 72 years ago. Additional bars are left in the more or less fragile paper stencil, and these must be painted in by hand with a very small brush. But not all of them!
The siding on the left side is getting finish nailed to be ready for final coat of orange paint.
The left side door is getting orange paint by Victor Humphreys.
Everything on the left isde now has at least one coat of the orange paint. Come out and see it next weekend for the Member Showcase event!
You have seen this end along the way as work progresses. What a difference even one coat of finish paint makes.

Work continues year around in the woodshop. Either using the tools and machines to make new parts, or in this case toward adding new functional capability that we did not have. Following are four views of an American Wood Working Machinery Company Number 10 Model 3 table saw manufactured in Rochester NY circa 1923. This is a MANLY saw capable of using a 20 INCH sawblade and will allow us to cut corner posts, framing timbers, etc for our restorations.
