Comments (0) Wood Shop and Other News - June 27, 2010This weekend, with help from longtime member and hardworking volunteer Dick Lukin, we applied lettering to one side of the cab of our electric workhorse locomotive. Of course the piece is parked inside Barn 8 which suffered storm damage (see related posts) and that made the work tough. No way to even run an extension cord for a drop light from three buildings away so we labored on in the dimness. I had to post this poor pic to prove the work done. Imagine taking a pic of a black subject in a dark building and maybe you will understand the blur. With help from Tim Peters, there was some progress on the parts being made for a new depot door. It looks like the next steps will be to plunge the needed mortises. Speaking of Tim, the heavy rains Sunday morning drove him away from other life pursuits and here he was, working on an end door from the next project. You guessed it, a wood el car, Chicago Rapid Transit 1797. You might guess knitting classes were underway, but Frank Sirinek and Dan Fenlaciki were tieing new bundles of virgin wool yarn to be used for waste packing in our cars and motor bearings. George Clark has stripped the bad siding from the second side of LSE 810 and he is now laying out and drilling the needed holes in a custom made Z section of structural steel. You will note the badly deteriorated sill on the car behind him. The second new signbox box wood sash has been installed on the CA&E 409 and Frank Hicks is engaged in applying the final coat of red paint. Jon Fenlaciki continues on the task of removing side windows from the CA&E 451 and restoring them to their brass finish. Norm Krentel and Jeff Brady pause for a photo op in the new shop addition. The now completed baggage doors have been moved in and they are getting set to spray paint the primer coat on these. Monday, June 28. 2010

Comments (0) URTX 26640 Update - June 27, 2010We must be in the monsoon season since it seems there are deluges every day, at least on the days I have available to get out to IRM. Nevertheless, Victor Humphreys continues to add paintwork and finishing touches to this restoration project. And in between downpours, I have started to apply lettering to the A end of the car. Lightning Strike Update - June 27, 2010 Posted by Robert Kutella

Comments (3) Lightning Strike Update - June 27, 2010Here is an update submitted by Roger Smessaert. It seems that the extent of the damage was far wider than we first noted, and there was additional storm related damage. *********** Max T the IRM Electrical Czar called me tonight at 10pm from his motel in Dwight IL to give me a status report. First, Max got the report that Tim Peters had checked voltage in barn 8 and found a nominal 600 VDC reading inside the barn (with the switch being blown open). Max felt that was alarming so he looked into it as soon as he could. The short story is.... yes the inside was alive at 600VDC. Max disconnected some tap wires and found the Track 82 NoBo section insulator had been punctured by lightning and was the source problem. To isolate the feed to the section insulator he removed the tip and tied the trolley wire back in the clear. If Track 82 is used you will have to hop the trolley wire past the insulator until it is fixed. Max talked to Gerry Dettloff and they felt that a stinger could be used to liven any track needed to pull equipment in/out with caution of course. Next the many transformer cutouts (fuses) were dealt with. Barn 6 & 7 are all closed and re-energized with service restored. Barn 8 has several issues that require further repairs. Starting with the transformer bank, the lightning arrestor is shorted and needs to be replaced. The 3 phase transformer is burned out and requires being replaced. The transformer primary bushing was shattered (and scattered) by the lightning. The neutral conductor of the 3 phase service from the transformer to the lighting panel (via the service entrance cable) is annealed and requires replacement before service can be restored. The ground wire from the lighting panel to a driven ground will have to be replaced. It is also annealed and the diecast conduit connector to the panel board is burned. See Jamie K's excellent selection of photos of the equipment damage at this link: http://www.irm.org/gallery/barn8damage-06232010 . All in all a lot got done today. In addition to the above work on the barn outages. Max also restored the mainline signal system. A primary fuse on the mainline east of the sub was blown by the storm Saturday night. 65 amp fuse - possibly tree contact east of Karstens is the usual suspect. And ALSO, the carline was reopened after the whacked steel pole on the S curve was straightened and anchored and the span wire re-attached. Max reports he really enjoyed the day of troubleshooting the IRM multiple problems from the storm damage. He sure had a busy day and was very productive. He worked until 6pm then drove to his motel in Dwight, IL to prepare for a new week on his recent "real job" at Ransom, IL. Thursday, June 24. 2010Wood Shop Update - June 23, 2010John Faulhaber and Rich Witt make some fine adjustment cuts on the new 409 signbox sash, otherwise completed in the preceeding few weeks. Buzz Morissette is tinkering with some small trim and window sill parts for the MILW 01984 caboose project. Summer employee Mark Osiecki is in the new shop addition space to stay out of the rain. He is painting the new station battens produced in our woodshop. Carl Ilwitzer was also engaged in a similar task at the other end of the room. We got some unexpected volunteer help Wednesday morning. Steve Binning of St. Louis, Eric Starr, and Marilyn Starr are stripping paint in the late afternoon on an interior panel removed from the Shaker Heights 63 PCC car. Wednesday, June 23. 2010
Lightning Strike - Barn 8 - June 23, ... Posted by Robert Kutella

Comment (1) Lightning Strike - Barn 8 - June 23, 2020I did not get pictures but thought this might merit as a news item. Best guess, trying to reconstruct events, a squall line of thunderstorms came through the museum site about 10-11 last night. It appears that the trolley wire near Barn 8 got a hit and the current traveled inside the building to our newly installed safety switch and disconnect. It totally destroyed that, a pile of molten metal in the bottom of the charred case. Then it blew a hole in the back of the case and blew a hole through the metal barn siding. From there the metal siding conducted the strike to the corner trim (all fasteners at the joints burned), then to the door trim (some burning at the lower hinge) and into ground. When it blew through the building wall some of the wood timber and framing caught fire but self extinguished. Also puzzling is that both of the five bulb clusters indicating barn power is energized had exploded bulbs, or bulbs blown completely out of the sockets, and the fuses for those were burned. Either the current got there from ionized air inside the cabinet or a second branch of the lightning jumped the outdoor section insulators to get inside. Those are only designed to insulate against 600 volts, far below the potential of lightning, but we may never know. So for now, no 600 volt service is possible to Barn 8 and cars inside are in effect stranded. They might be able to be pulled out with a locomotive, or moved with a heavy stinger, but there is no other place to store them, and this cumbersome process would have to be reversed at night. Damage maybe in excess of $2K-3K and a significant lead time if we are to order and replace the cabinet, cables, fuses, etc. Bob Kutella Monday, June 21. 2010
Passenger dept Update 2010-06-21 Posted by Phil Stepek

Comments (8) Passenger dept Update 2010-06-21ok ok i know I have not posted anything for a while. I really apologize. With the two large events for the dept (Memorial day and RPO weekend) added to the ongoing maintenance and work in Barn 3 and Yard 5 i just havent had a lot of extra energy when I get near a computer. I hope to add photos soon as well to document some of the work that has gone on Progress on B&M car, ATSF 2544, DLW structural work and CRIP ceiling repairs are all going on I have added the last report to the Board here as well. I hope it answers some of the questions. Feel free to ask if something else isnt covered . GENERAL DEPARTMENT PROGRESS Early season progress continues to take place We were able to support both the Memorial Day and RPO weekends with significant equipment, all inspected and repaired for season. Mike and crew were able to not only provide a seven car train for Memorial Day but actually managed to perform some significant repairs along the way, and still made the deadline. two cars had defective brake valves, and both were repaired. An advantage of this early season inspection is that the routine testing will be completed, and should prevent any "surprises" as we approach our annual visit from the Island of Sodor. We have been successful in completing conversion of two more passenger cars, DMIR 84 and IC 2804, from 32vdc to 120vac lighting. The change has created a much more visible interior for the cars, as well as reducing the electrical load for display. In addition, the blowers in 2804 have been routed through a transformer to allow for their use while the train is in revenue service if electricity is provided. We now are in position to have 14 of the 16 cars inside Barn 3 lit for display, and eight of these are now operating on 120vac lighting. Power demands are assessed for each car, and listed beside the breaker panel for information if needed. Besides the cars in revenue service, we have been successful in re-awakening the special exhibit cars. They were cleaned and prepped in time for their use by the WW2 display folks and they seemed to have enjoyed the space. The first car is completely useable now, and the second car is lit as a passage, with expanded exhibit space now a very real possibility. We are now supporting Ray Bellock in his attempt to install more exhibits for the remainder of the summer. The ideas have included a Chicago Railroad Fair display as well as a freight traffic exhibit, and a possible expanded Railroad Mail Service exhibit to enhance our annual RPO event. The next project is to complete ceiling repairs in CRIP 2555 and then complete the vestibule and entry on the third DLW coach. With the budget approved, the wheel switch on the CRIP coach also remains a plan for this season. Within the limits of Barn 3, we are also trying to make the space more visitor friendly, rearranging storage and making an effort to remove inactive equipment and supplies. Yard 5 visitor path signs are in place, and seem to be improving the traffic pattern there. We await the script information requested from Roger Kramer to add signage to other cars in Barn 3 as well as on exterior display Standard safety equipment is now in place in all revenue units, including electric cars. Operating crews no longer need to locate and inspect safety equipment prior to use, In addition, success of the program depends upon monthly inspection to ensure proper placement. Further slight expansion of the system will be needed prior to Thomas but no problem with that goal is forseen. INDIVIDUAL EQUIPMENT REPORTS DLW coaches (3) Changes are progressing , but not yet completed. Two cars are in service. Repainting of the roofs on the two cars in service was completed The third car is progressing in the repair of the vestibule, but is on hold until the car inspections are completed. The platform is in place, and the door and frame have been remounted. CBQ RPO 1923 The success of the RPO weekend leads to our intent to create a more active display within the car. We have acquired permission to use a Living history DVD produced at EIU, and have planned a method of securing the doorways to allow interior views for our guests during periods when no docent is available. ATSF 2544
The prep work for the second side of seats has continued. Seat frames are being prepared and the wall work nears completion, with paint work is completed, we now await the opportunity to complete the seat frames and reinstall them. Dover Strait Progress continues piecemeal, as reassembly of the lounge area continues. Corridor painting continues, and hardware installation also continues. B&M 3288/1094 No significant changes, beyond the continued progress. Part of the plan for summer includes the possible move of the car to a location where exterior work can be done. Yard 5 display The sleeper display has been open as planned, and interior function has been successful. We have altered some of the videos to support events at the museum, having creating several WW2 displays for Memorial Day, and we hope to have North Shore videos running for Chicago weekend in honor of 749 rededication.

Comments (4) URTX 26640 Update - June 19, 2010Today it was the 'Buzz Morisette Show' as he worked to remove the masks and taping on the new MILW heralds. The above two images show the start of the removal process and the result. There is still a lot of touch up to be done, but doesn't that look NICE? On to the south side for the start of tape removal. And we end the photo documentary as Buzz removes the last bit of mask from the second herald completed this day. |
