You did not think I would let you get away without some views of our hopper car restoration, did you? I know it may not seem to be balanced reporting but this major effort by the Freight Car Department is near to my heart, and I could not help but take a lot of images.
Victor Humphreys continued work on the truck sideframes, completing the finish painting on the right side of this car.
I suppose modelers treat such notations with only passing interest as long as some generic stuff is shown on a car. Not so with our restorations, seen here complete on the right side of the car. There are a lot of letters and numbers painted here, each one having a meaning and significance to this car.
There were needed switch moves in Barn 8 and also Barn 4. Our beloved hopper got outdoors for the first time since lettering efforts began and this 3/4 view from the B end shows much of the efforts to advantage.
A similar pose is this view from the A end, and yes, some lettering has been applied here also. Keep hoping for good weather for this pace to continue.
This is a more traditional straight on view of the right side. Amazingly, there are four more blocks of decorations to be painted on this side.
Too soon, the locomotive coupled up and the hopper was off to be put away.
This close up of the B end, shows nearly complete lettering for this end, some of it still wet from being painted an hour previous.
We have had to wait about 16 weeks for the new tires to be manufactured for this project. The waiting is over! They are done, have been shipped, and are probably on the road north to Illinois as I type.
Not exactly a party but a cause to rejoice nevertheless. The 972 came out of Barn 4 to the east for moving into position for the next stage. If you think it looks odd, that is due to the right hand end being up in the air on a shop truck.
Then into the pocket on track 40, to allow for the next move in this chess game. It was a bit tricky getting it to negotiate the diverging side of this track switch, but accomplished without incident.
The car is inched east for secure footing on the concrete apron of Track 41. Joel Ahrendt is placing heavy car stands for use after the car is in the air. I was not able to stay to witness the fact, but it is confirmed that the second original truck is out from under the car and ready to be disassembled.
We are very close to reaching the fundraising goal set at the beginning of this project earlier this year. Yes, THIS YEAR! That is really fast progress judged by any preservation or restoration project. Please help out on this, large or small donation to help us reach the goal, and maybe to provide a little extra, as any unforeseen repairs crop up along the way. It is not too late to send your help to restricted fund RTMS.

Here are a few items I have been holding a few days. I just seem to be elsewhere when a lot of the action takes place. The work IS going on.
George Clark has been able to resume work on Lake Shore Electric 810. Here he is preparing new siding for the north side of the car.
And here, it has been primed and no doubt will be finish painted and on the car soon.
Roger Kramer has joined others working in our shops, as colder weather chases many of us indoors. This a passenger gate for the John Mc Loughlin, cleaned and primed, finish paint being applied.
Tim Peters is preparing a wood corner block for the Michigan Electric 28. It is almost more of a 'sculpture' rather than a straightforward woodworking task.
