Comments (0) We Could Hardly Wait for Thomas in August...As the curator of Barn 3, Mike Baksic was directing the passenger car department crew late July and into August in preparation for Thomas. This work included applying air for brake testing of coaches, making sure there were enough seats to have spares should any break during the event. The team also made sure that window latches and chains were functional in each of the cars. The Ely, lounge car, dining car and other cars in the barn were vacuumed for visitors. Jon Habeggar spruced up the Exhibit Car. After every thing was ready to go and Thomas came to IRM, then Jon took his position in the Exhibit Car, Mike, Ray Mormann, and Mark Gellman rode on the Thomas cars sporadically to make sure that everything was fine. When they weren't riding on the Thomas cars they were starting preparation on the streamline cars for the next big event. David Stepek came down twice to help Miss Shelly Vanderschaegen with crushing cans and emptying garbage. Wayne Baksic, father of department head Mike, was the greeter in the Galt House dining car while Miss Shelly was greeting the pubic and taking pictures of families in the Santa Fe lounge car. Andy Townsend was substituting for Shelly when needed. Ken Kosan was in the RDC and Kevin Kriebs was in the Pacific Peak. Both were telling folks about the car they were in as they passed through the streamline cars. Meanwhile, Lee Evans Sr. was in the Birmingham with snacks for the public. While all this was going on during August, John McKelvey was reupholstering chairs for the Lake City.
Tuesday, October 22. 2013Steam Department Update 10-19-2013This week we have an extremely second hand report put together in a hotel room in Australia based upon the input from Phil, Eric, Collin and the guys. · In the cab: A team consisting of Collin, Ed, Jason and the two Brians discovered that a piece of the sheet metal covering the lagging around the radius of the firebox had a small alignment problem. The piece had a hole for the steam chest pressure gauge pipe to pass through. This pipe was rotten and was replaced during the winter. The pipe was replaced in a slightly higher location that originally located and thus did not fit through the sheet metallic as planned. The sheet metal was modified and the cab sheet metal is now almost complete. The throttle was adjusted. Jason and Brian Davies worked on this project, which is ongoing. This is proving to be tricky as minor variations in the setting of the throttle lever cause it to foul other equipment. The fire hole doors were reassembled and a lot of the key piping was figured out. Several more pieces of the cab jacketing were put on. · Cameron and David worked on reassembling the blast pipe in the smoke box. The contact surfaces were cleaned and the blast pipe and blanking plate were installed and tightened down. So this is now sealed and ready for the pressure test. · The fireman’s side main air tank was installed. It took a lot of fussing around trying to get the air tank installed but after a lot of back and forth we were able to get the air tank in and the “U” bolts on it. · Work continued the jacketing. As the old jacketing is being assembled several small places between the jacketing have exposed insulation. So, several new pieces of jacketing have been made. These new pieces will go in as filler over the small gaps. Eric with help from Philip worked on making the new pieces of sheet metal. · Jerry and Jim worked on putting the insulation on the fire box. A long and slow process as many little pieces must be made in order to be fit between the flexible stay bolts. · Mike worked on the air compressor. Just the top valve is left to go on it. Mike says it is in good shape as the picture shows. It now just needs to be cleaned up and then it can be reassembled and the air compressor can be tested. In other areas: · Phil finished drilling the hole in the bolster of the Shay to the proper size. It is now ready for the bushing to be pressed in. · Bob continued to assemble small pieces of piping to the planer. It is slowly getting closer to operational condition. So, overall there was a lot of progress toward the critical testing. Hopefully there will be a lot more to report next week. Nigel Sunday, October 20. 2013Wood Shop Update - October 5-8, 2013Slowly, a bit at a time, I am trying to catch up with these BLOG entries. Maybe now I am only two weeks in arrears, although there are some 'extra' days scheduled at IRM again this week. Here is a short summary of the restoration work in Barn 4. Those who follow along with these posts will recall the wood shop forces making round top windows for our classic Boston and Maine wood passenger car, last winter. Ted Anderson has done us one better. Here is our frame, with a new leaded glass assembly. Won't this look nice painted and varnished, installed in B&M 1094? Bill Peterson helped make these pieces of new roof molding for Chicago Aurora a& Elgin car 36. Lorne Tweed wrestled with this seemingly simple piece of curved trim to finish out the rear left side window on our PCC, Cleveland Transit System 4223. I learned a few new words as the stubborn piece was in, and out, and in again, and out again, . . . John Faulhaber, Lorne Tweed, Dave Rogan, and Simon Harrison then turned their efforts to lifting and installing the rear large panel in the CTS 4223 ceiling. Our Dynamic Duo, John Faulhaber and Gerry Dettloff, continue working new canvas on the west end of Lake Shore Electric 810. These last two photos are from Gerry, and I may have another one not yet uploaded. So if the next BLOG entry seems to have material out of sequence, NO - we are not moving backward in time.John Faulhaber has an iron from home ( I hope not) and he is smoothing the puckers and shrinking them in on the new canvas on Lake Shore electric 810. |
