Two new volunteers are seen contributing their efforts to this project. Krystine Tempinski is on the left opening a can of paint, and Gwyneth Stupar is on the right. The task is to paint test patches on the car side to make a final evaluation of paint formulas.
Still good friends, the ladies have finished this job!
Kirk Warner has connected shop air up to the hopper car and is applying the brakes, measuring cylinder travel, and inspecting for any defects.
Archealogy 101 class is in session. We are trying to carefully pick through at least four layers of stenciling on the right hand end of the car. Anyone that has old photos of these or similar cars on the Great Northern can help us here. What we hope to uncover is the 1965 era lettering. So far we can see "ASE R.B." on the first line - a partial of Grease Roller Bearing note? Below that we have uncovered "G.N.-Y" which puts us on the Great Northern in Superior, Wisconsin. Somewhere in this string could be one or more words and a date. Anyone??
Lots happening on this project over the three day holiday. Here Gwyn Stupar catches Kirk Warner with a disk of center bearing grease. The car is on on jacks for the next step.
And this is the next step - reaching into the exposed cup on top of the truck to lay in that lubricant. In case you did not recognize him, that is Kirk Warner.
By Monday afternoon the caboose was ready for a test drive on the main line. Here an engine couples up to the caboose in Yard 5. Jamie Kolanowski was the engineer, Warren Lloyd the conductor, and Kirk Warner the chaperone.
Buzz Morrisette caught a quick snapshop as the train was ready to leave east to the end of the line. From all accounts the bearings ran cool and no defects noted.
