As new photos are uploaded to the member gallery, they will be moved to this gallery periodically. For those that want to upload to this new album, let me know and I'll add the permissions to the album. Thursday, June 11. 2009

Comments (0) URTX 26640 Update June 7, 2009Truck work has started and here we see John Baletto needlechipping the years of grunge and failed paint off of one of the truck sideframes. Just think - if you volunteer we can teach YOU to do this work! Thursday, June 11. 2009Freight Car InspectionsA crew led by Kirk Warner has been toiling over the inspections we perform every year before operating our freight cars in demonstration trains, caboose service, etc. Here you see John Baletto topping up journal oil in our Bordens milk tank car, in the South End Yards on June 7, 2009. Thursday, June 11. 2009Wood Shop Update June 7, 2009Tim Peters is behind the scaffolding but you can see the good progress he is making on the east end of this car. Come out on the 4th of July, you may see this car get some exercise in the Trolley Parade!! If so, for the first time in years, and with a lot of improvements and restoration work to boot. Shelley Vandershagen is helping Wayne Baksic as they work on our HB Smith tenoner. The new machine guards are nearing completion. Monday, June 8. 2009
Passenger Dept Update 2009-06-07 Posted by Phil Stepek

Comments (0) Passenger Dept Update 2009-06-07The passenger Dept is getting ready for the RPO weekend coming this week. Sunday Nick, Marc and Shelly spent the biggest chunk of day washing the car, getting most of the graffiti off. Marc has done a great job with touchup paint, and he is really having a good time with the event. As with many events we begin, it has become bigger and bigger every year. On the other fronts, we have made progress on the stair repair to the DLW coach with the owie, and Mike hopes to have it out for brake testing and service this weekend. Roger has been steadily making progress on paint removal on the vestibule of the John McGlothan. The electrical feeder to the Dover Strait is moving along. Streamliner sleeper set will be open for display both days this weekend, and I hope to get a good set of photos of the events for the website. Everyone come on out and have a good time this week! Chicago Surface Lines 3142 - June 6, ... Posted by Robert Kutella

Comment (1) Chicago Surface Lines 3142 - June 6, 2009As many of you may have heard we recently suffered a traction motor failure on this car and that has sidelined it from service. And this car has been a real work horse and much needed to handle riders in our summer operating season. Frank Sirinek, Kirk Warner, and Dick Cubbage check clearances under the platform as the car is jacked up to allow the motor truck to be rolled out. This is a tricky operation, and of course motor cables, brake rigging, and a lot of other prep work must be done before this stage is reached. The truck is out and there looks to be a lot of finger pointing going on. Several members rose to the occasion and dropped their projects to assist in this. Needless to say the motor was removed and readied for shipment at the end of the day, with no mishaps and the truck restored back under the carbody. GOOD WORK! Sunday, June 7. 2009
Trolley Bus Dept - 06/07/2009 Posted by Ray Piesciuk

Comments (0) Trolley Bus Dept - 06/07/2009Here’s a synopsis of what has been taking place in the Trolley Bus Department over the last several weeks. Yesterday Wally Unglaub spent the entire morning tearing apart groups, overhead special work, and other parts for easier storage (preparing for the arrival of the Edmonton coach). Bob Bourne came in from Iowa and operated Chicago Marmon 9553 in the afternoon with Wally riding in back for wye-ing. We are planning on running that coach again for Chicago Day in 2 weeks. While that was going on, we were visited by (Regular Member #1) Charlie King, which spurred Richard Schauer and Jerry Saunders to drill and mount brand new trolley boards on the CSL 84 and reconnected the trolley poles/bases. The newly refurbished air compressor came back to life and sounded great! We are working on getting some wheel studs to reattach the curbside rear wheels in order to get it rolling again.
In previous weeks, Richard Schauer and I have been going through our stored parts, looking for where we can consolidate and rearrange. We then bring them to Wally who (carefully) tears them apart, making them easier to store. Howard Geier spent Memorial Day weekend working on the Curbliner (Des Moines), most notably getting the temporary back doors ready for glass installation. We have also dedicated a couple weekends toward getting the New York subway cars closer than ever to being added to the operating fleet. Recent steps forward were attaching retrievers for both trolley poles, and doing a thorough and much needed cleaning of the interior. There is a little more cleaning left to do as well as a few more loose ends to tie up. Look for them in the Trolley Pageant next month and in service, dare I say, by the end of the season??? (Reminder: These cars are still carrying a debt. If you can, please consider a contribution to the "NY Subway Cars" fund. We would love to get them a decent coat of paint.)
Sorry I haven’t taken pictures for a while. I’ll try and get some for the next entry. |

I was not around at the time. General discussion suggests that it was "pretty marginal" in a number of areas. Nigel

No, it will not be necessary to hold any of the work waiting for the plow to be turned, end for end. Weather will be the major factor, but there will [...]
