Monday, October 31. 2011GN 70104 Update - October 26-30, 2011In between the demands of all the other projects, I have managed to sneak in more work on our Great Northern hopper car lettering.  Reporting Marks The reporting marks have been applied to the right side, showing the car's true identity for the first time at IRM.  The Last Large N Dan Fenlaciki helped on this project all day Sunday, seen here peeling off some masking used on the final "N".  Northern It is pretty tough to get a good image inside the barn with no elbow room to stand back and admire the work. But NORTHERN is indeed completed on one side.  Great Northern Here is an overall view of the banner lettering proudly displaying the railroad name. This is a lot of hand painting and most of these letters have received the second coat of white. Monday, October 31. 2011B&O Wagon Top Update - October 29, 2011This was another of the Freight Car Department 'milestone' goals accomplished, as each year we race the calendar to beat old man winter.  Long View Buzz Morisette, Bob Kutella, and Victor Humphreys are on the roof of this boxcar, to spray paint the first coat of finish enamel on the roof, thus protecting the primer from the ravages of oncoming winter.  Finishing Up Buzz and Victor are at the A end, finishing up the tough areas around the roofwalk and laterals.  Big Change It was a very long day for the three of us, but here is the result. A very big change in appearance for anyone tall enough to see it. In this one season, about half the area of the boxcar sides, ends and roof have been restored, primed and painted! Monday, October 31. 2011CTS 4223 Update - October 26-30, 2011 Front End Lorne Tweed continued working on the interior of the front end so that all work in this area is ready for the new windows. Metal repairs, priming and painting are done now.  Rear Clamshell Alex Randow was too quick for my camera as he completed removing all old paint, sanding metal surfaces smooth, and priming of this large piece.  Window Post Caps Ed Grzesik and Rod Turner are working on the window post caps, parts that need to be repaired to complete side window installation. Here is one that has had new metal welded in place after removing rusted out sections.  More Windows Nancy Ring has taken on the challenge of cleaning up old corrosion on the side window sash. So far, there has not proven to be an easy way of doing this. Instead, a lot of painstaking hand work is required. |
